What to watch in PS5 SSDs this event
The PS5 expansion slot takes a consumer M.2 NVMe drive that meets Sony's published requirement, and Sony's own installation guide says the drive needs a cooling structure such as a heatsink. That makes this category a threshold purchase rather than a leaderboard: a compliant drive satisfies the console, and paying for a specification above the threshold buys nothing the PS5 uses. We do not publish speed comparisons, and on this platform they would not change the decision.
Every drive in our PS5 set is selected against Sony's requirement, so membership in the table is the compliance test. What varies is price per gigabyte, capacity, whether a heatsink is fitted, and whether the listing is new or used. The table shows all of those, one row per drive.
Capacity is the decision that matters. Games are large and growing; a drive too small for the library you actually keep is the most common PS5 storage regret. Choose the capacity first, then compare within it.
An external USB drive is cheaper per terabyte, and Sony's own documentation is clear about its limit: PS5 games can be stored on USB extended storage but not played from it, while PS4 games can be played from it. For a large library you mostly archive, a USB drive plus a smaller M.2 drive can be the cheaper combination.
Fitted or bare: the heatsink arithmetic
Some drives ship with a heatsink fitted; others are bare and need one bought separately. Which route is cheaper changes by capacity and by week, so the panel above sets the cheapest bare drive plus the cheapest standalone heatsink against the cheapest fitted drive at each capacity where we hold both.
We apply one strictness rule here that the rest of our PS5 pages do not yet: a drive counts as fitted only when its own listing title says it has a heatsink. An audit on 24 September 2026 found that roughly half the drives our data marks as fitted have titles that say nothing about a heatsink, and one says 'without'. Until that flag is re-audited, this page trusts the title, not the flag, so a bare drive cannot be compared as if it were fitted.
Fitting your own heatsink is simple but not risk-free: check clearance under the PS5's slot cover against Sony's stated maximum dimensions before buying one separately.
Planning capacity for a PS5 library
Most PS5 storage regret is a capacity decision, not a price one. A drive that fills within months was not a saving, however low its badge read on the day. Before the event, look at the games you actually keep installed and how often you delete and re-download; if re-downloading is cheap for you, a smaller drive plus patience is a real option, and if it is not, the next capacity up is usually the better buy.
The console's internal storage and the M.2 slot are the only places PS5 games run from, per Sony. A USB drive can hold PS5 games you are not playing and PS4 games you are, which makes a cheap USB archive plus a mid-size M.2 drive a reasonable pairing for a large library. Whatever capacity you settle on, compare drives only within it. Price per gigabyte varies by capacity tier, and a headline 4TB discount says nothing about whether a 2TB drive is well priced this week.

The trap: paying for speed the console cannot use
The event trap in this category is the flagship drive at a headline discount. A top-tier Gen5 drive is not faster in a PS5 in any way the console exposes - the slot is PCIe Gen4 - and a discount on a drive priced for PC enthusiasts can still leave it far above a compliant Gen4 drive of the same capacity.
The second trap is the bare drive bought without a heatsink, or with one that does not fit under the cover. Check the fitted-versus-bare panel and Sony's dimensions before you check out.
An event is not a reason to upgrade console storage. If your PS5 still has room for what you play, the right purchase this week is none. Buy when you have run out of space for games you actually keep, at the capacity that fixes it, and when the drive's own badge says the price is low for it.
