NAS Drive Compatibility - Which Drives Actually Fit

Quick answer

Most NAS makers publish a list of drives they have tested, and for QNAP, TerraMaster and Asustor that list is advice rather than a gate - an unlisted drive still works. Synology is the exception: on 2025-and-later Value and J-series machines an unlisted hard drive cannot create a storage pool, and no third-party hard drive is listed. UniFi publishes no list at all, only a specification.

How compatibility actually works

Four things decide whether a drive works in a given machine, and only the last of them is the manufacturer's opinion.

Form factor is the crude one. A 3.5-inch bay takes a 3.5-inch drive; a 2.5-inch drive needs an adapter and sometimes a different screw pattern. Nothing subtle happens here, and it is the one constraint you cannot argue with.

Interface matters more than people expect. SATA and SAS use connectors that look almost identical, and a SATA drive will seat in a SAS backplane, but the reverse is not true - a SAS drive in a SATA-only machine is simply not seen. Most desktop NAS units are SATA-only. Enterprise chassis are usually SAS backplanes that accept both.

Capacity ceiling is real but rarer than the forums suggest. Modern machines address far more than anyone fills. Where a ceiling does exist it is usually an older model with a firmware limit, and it is the kind of claim we will only make with a vendor document behind it.

Recording technology is the one that quietly ruins arrays. Shingled (SMR) drives overlap their tracks to gain density, which makes sustained random writes very slow. In a RAID rebuild that can turn hours into days, and some controllers drop the drive before it finishes. This is why UniFi names CMR in its written requirement and why our CMR or SMR resolver exists.

Only after all four does the vendor list enter, and what it means depends entirely on which vendor wrote it.

This exact model appears on the manufacturer's own compatibility list, on the date we read it.

Fit-verified

Our check, not the vendor's: form factor, interface, the machine's capacity ceiling, and CMR where the vendor asks for it. It says the drive fits. It does not say the vendor supports it.

Not on list

The model is absent from the vendor's list. That is a fact about the list, not a verdict on the drive - read the note beside it for what the absence actually means on this machine.

The third badge is the one worth dwelling on. It is easy to read "not on the list" as "will not work", and on almost every machine covered here that reading is wrong. A list is a record of what somebody paid to test. Drives released after the machine shipped are absent because nobody went back and tested them, not because they failed. We never render a blank compatibility cell for this reason - an empty box invites the reader to supply the worst interpretation, so every row states which question was answered and who answered it.

How we sourced this

Every vendor list here was read in a real browser session, because none of them can be read any other way. Asustor's table returns fifteen rows and no data to a plain HTTP fetch while rendering 6,703 in a browser. Ubiquiti's help centre refuses the same fetch outright. Synology's page is an empty shell until its scripts run.

What we read, we recorded - the URL, the date, and the values - into a registry committed alongside the site's code. These pages render from that registry. They do not call a manufacturer when you load them, which means the date beside a claim is the date a person actually looked at it, and a vendor cannot change what our page says without us reading it again.

Less than people assume. A compatibility list records what a manufacturer chose to test, and testing costs money, so lists skew toward drives that were current when the machine launched and toward brands with a commercial relationship. Absence is evidence about the list, not about the drive. The one place absence really does bite is Synology's newer Value and J-series machines, where it blocks pool creation.

What is the difference between vendor-listed and fit-verified on this site?

Vendor-listed means we found that exact model on the manufacturer's own list on a stated date. Fit-verified is our own check - form factor, interface, the machine's capacity ceiling, and CMR where the vendor asks for it - and it means the drive fits, not that the vendor supports it. The two are never merged, because they answer different questions and carry different risk.

Do you check the manufacturer's list every time I load the page?

No, deliberately. Every vendor claim comes from a registry we captured in a dated browsing session and committed to source control. If a manufacturer changes its list, our pages change only when we re-read it and commit again. That makes the claim auditable: the date beside it is the date somebody actually looked.

Can I put a desktop drive in a NAS?

Physically yes, and for a single-bay or two-bay machine at light duty many people do. The real questions are recording technology and workload rating. An SMR drive can take hours to rebuild an array where a CMR drive takes a fraction of that, which is why several vendors name CMR explicitly. Our CMR or SMR resolver tells you which one a given model is.

Why do the vendors disagree so much about this?

Because the list is a commercial instrument as much as a technical one. Ubiquiti publishes a specification and lets you buy anything meeting it. QNAP tests widely and annotates what it has not tested. Synology sells its own drives and, on its newer entry machines, will not build a pool without them. All three positions are defensible engineering; only one of them also determines who you can buy from.
