Why buy the machine late

Enterprise hardware depreciates on a schedule set by lease terms and refresh cycles rather than by whether it still works. A server that cost five figures new leaves its first owner after three to five years because the accounting says so, and arrives on the second-hand market at a fraction of that with most of its useful life intact. Nothing about it has got worse. What has changed is who wants it.

For a homelab or a small office the appeal is specific, and it is not raw processing power — a modern desktop chip will outrun these machines on most single-threaded work. The appeal is the things a desktop cannot do at any price: eight, twelve or twenty-four hot-swap drive bays wired to a proper backplane; twenty-four DIMM slots that take ECC memory; redundant power supplies; and a management controller that lets you run the machine from somewhere else entirely.

The storage case is the strongest of those. A SAS backplane will accept ordinary SATA drives, so a twelve-bay enterprise chassis can be filled with the same inexpensive high-capacity disks sold for desktops and NAS boxes. You get the chassis engineering — the airflow, the carriers, the hot-swap — at second-hand prices, and buy the drives at consumer prices. That combination is why these machines keep selling.

What you are taking on

Three real costs come with the bargain, and none of them are hidden if you look. The first is noise. This is rack hardware designed for a room with its own cooling, by people who assumed nobody would sleep nearby. Where the machine lives matters more than which machine you buy, and it is a decision that costs nothing now and is expensive to reverse once a heavy chassis is in the house.

The second is power. A dual-socket machine of this vintage draws meaningfully more at idle than a modern low-power system, and it draws it every hour of every month. We publish no wattage figures on these pages because the honest answer depends on the processors, the number of populated DIMMs, the number of spinning drives and the power supplies fitted — anyone quoting one confident number for a model rather than a machine is quoting something they cannot know. Price it as a range against your own tariff before you buy, especially if you are considering more than one.

The third is that there is no warranty conversation. Used enterprise gear is generally sound, but it arrives as-is, so the first hour matters: confirm it POSTs cleanly, confirm every bay detects a drive, confirm both power supplies work, and confirm you can reach the management interface and use its remote console. Each model page carries that checklist adapted to the machine.

Read the backplane, not the model number

The single most useful habit when shopping for these machines is to stop reading model numbers and start reading configurations. On this class of hardware the backplane is selected when the machine is built and is generally not a field upgrade, which means the front of the chassis decides what storage the machine can ever hold. Two servers with the same model number, the same processors and the same price can differ by a factor of three in how much storage they will ever accept.

The traps are specific and they are per-model. One of these machines has no 3.5-inch option at all, so it can never hold large spinning disks. One has a four-bay entry chassis that is SATA-only and will reject the cheap SAS enterprise drives that make used arrays affordable. One has a small chassis the vendor states outright cannot be upgraded to the larger one in the field. And one is a platform where three different backplanes fit the same physical bays, so two identical-looking machines can support entirely different drive types. Frequently Asked Questions

For bays and memory capacity, yes — it remains the cheapest way to get a large number of hot-swap drive bays, ECC memory and remote management under one lid. What you trade is noise, idle power and a warranty. The machines on these pages are all several generations old, which is precisely why they are affordable; they were built to a standard consumer hardware is not, and most spent their lives in temperature-controlled rooms.

Start from the drive bays, not the processors. A 2U chassis with a 12-bay 3.5-inch backplane will hold far more capacity than a 1U machine with ten 2.5-inch bays, and large-capacity drives are only made in 3.5-inch. The backplane is chosen at point of purchase on this class of hardware, so it is the specification to shop for first — everything else on the machine is easier to change afterwards.

Yes, wherever the backplane is SAS. SAS controllers and backplanes talk to SATA drives by design, which means a used enterprise chassis will run the same inexpensive high-capacity drives sold for desktops and NAS boxes. The reverse is not true: a SAS drive will not work in a SATA-only backplane, and a couple of the configurations documented on these pages are SATA-only.

Loud enough that placement matters more than model choice. We publish no decibel figures because we have not measured any, and vendors do not state them for used configurations. The consistent finding in owner reports is that hardware the management controller does not recognise raises the fan floor — so a third-party card or drive can turn a tolerable machine into an intolerable one. Community fan-control procedures exist and are discussed on ServeTheHome and r/homelab; they are unofficial and we do not reproduce them.

The remote console — the feature that lets you install an operating system and rescue the machine from a laptop — sits behind the licensed tier on all three vendors. The hardware is present on every machine; the licence is not, and it does not show in a listing photograph. Ask the seller which tier is active, in writing, before you buy. This is the most common disappointment for first-time buyers of used enterprise hardware.

Each model page cites the vendor document it was built from — a Dell technical guide or owner's manual, an HPE QuickSpecs, or a Lenovo setup guide — and links to it. Where a document does not state something, we leave it out rather than infer it from a sibling model. These machines look alike and are not alike, and an inferred bay configuration is how somebody ends up with drives that will not come up.
