Same name, different product

SanDisk names its tiers the same way across everything it sells. That is good branding and a genuine trap for buyers, because an β€œExtreme” is not a specification - it is a position in a range, and the range exists separately inside each form factor. Somebody who read a review of the SanDisk Extreme portable SSD and then bought a SanDisk Extreme microSD has bought a product with a different interface, a different controller, a different speed profile and roughly a hundredfold difference in cost per gigabyte.

SanDisk's microSD packaging carries read figures of 150, 190 and 200MB/s depending on the line. Those numbers are not invented, and they are also not achievable on the bus the cards run on.

On the headline MB/s figures

Figures above roughly 104MB/s on a UHS-I card are the manufacturer's own claim and depend on a proprietary reader: the UHS-I bus itself is specified to 104MB/s, so a standard card reader or a camera will not reach them.

The practical consequence is that the difference between a 190MB/s card and a 200MB/s card is invisible in a camera, a phone or a standard card reader, because both are limited by the same 104MB/s interface [source: SD Association]. Endurance is a different axis

High Endurance and Max Endurance sit outside the Ultra/Extreme ladder because they are rated on something else entirely. A dashcam or a security camera writes over the same card continuously, for years, and what fails is not speed but the flash's tolerance for being rewritten. These lines trade peak read - both are rated well below Extreme - for a rewrite life the speed-focused lines are not built for [source: SanDisk].

The practical split is that High Endurance is positioned for dashcams and Max Endurance for always-on security cameras, which record more hours per day. Putting an Extreme in a dashcam is the common and expensive mistake: it rates higher on everything the dashcam does not need and wears out sooner at the one thing it does.

Counterfeits concentrate here

Being the most recognised name in memory cards has a cost: SanDisk is the brand counterfeiters imitate most, because it is what people search for. The fakes copy the packaging, the hologram and the printed part numbers well enough that photographs will not separate them, and the card reports whatever capacity it was told to report.

The defence that works is price. A counterfeit ships a fraction of the flash it charges for and prices accordingly, so a SanDisk card far beneath the going rate for its capacity is the one thing the fraud cannot hide. How to choose inside the range

Start from the job rather than the ladder. Almost every buyer who ends up disappointed by a memory card bought a tier based on where it sat in the range rather than on what the device asks for, and the two questions have different answers surprisingly often.

General phone, tablet or handheld storage. Ultra is the answer, and the money saved against Extreme buys more capacity, which is what actually changes the experience of using the device. The one exception is a device that runs applications from the card rather than merely storing files on it, where the A2 mark on the higher lines is a real difference in how responsive the device feels - a different property from the video ratings, and the only case where the tier step is worth paying for in ordinary use.

Video capture. Find the V mark your camera documents and buy the cheapest card per gigabyte that carries it. Extreme and Extreme Pro both certify V30, so for any camera asking V30 they are equivalent on the specification that matters, and the choice between them comes down to price. If a camera documents V60 or V90 - high-bitrate 4K, 8K, high frame rate - neither of these lines carries it, and that is the point at which you are shopping in a different part of the market entirely rather than a higher tier of this one.

Continuous recording. Ignore the speed ladder completely and buy an endurance line. A dashcam writes over its card every day for years, and the specification that predicts whether it survives that is rewrite endurance, which the Ultra and Extreme lines are not built or rated for. This is the recommendation most often reversed by well-meaning advice, because a higher tier sounds like a safer choice and in this one application it is the opposite.

A Nintendo Switch 2. None of these lines will work for game storage. The console requires microSD Express, a different bus entirely, and the SanDisk cards that satisfy it are a separate product from anything on this page - the Express cards and their price premium are covered separately.

One habit worth carrying across all of these: rank on cost per gigabyte within the set that qualifies, not on price. A 128GB card at a low headline price is frequently worse value than a 256GB card that costs more, and the per-gigabyte column in our tables is there so that comparison takes a second rather than arithmetic. In a category where capacity is the thing people actually run out of, the cheapest card is rarely the best purchase.

What is the real difference between Extreme and Extreme Pro on microSD?

Less than the names suggest. Both carry the same certification marks - U3, V30, A2 - which means both guarantee the same 30MB/s sustained write floor, and that floor is what determines whether video recording holds up. The difference is the manufacturer's claimed peak read speed, which is a maximum under their test conditions rather than a certified minimum. If you are recording video, the certification is the specification that matters and the two are equivalent on it.

What does the 200MB/s on the packaging actually mean?

It is SanDisk's own measured figure using their proprietary reader. The UHS-I bus these cards run on is specified with an interface ceiling of 104MB/s, so a standard card reader, a camera or a laptop slot will not reach the advertised number. High Endurance or Max Endurance for a dashcam?
