About DatacenterDisk

DatacenterDisk is a live price-intelligence tracker for enterprise and specialist storage. It exists to answer one question honestly: what does a terabyte actually cost today, and is that a normal price or an unusual one? Everything on the site is built to answer that from measurement rather than from opinion.

What the site does

We track hard drives, SSDs, NAS drives, LTO tape, server memory, NAS enclosures, networking parts and server hardware sold on Amazon US. Every listing is verified against Amazon's catalogue API rather than scraped from a rendered page, so a price on this site corresponds to a real, identified product rather than to whatever text happened to be on a page when a crawler visited. Listings that go out of stock stop being shown; they are not left on a page to inflate a count.

Alongside prices we record per-model specifications - recording technology, workload rating, warranty term, interface, form factor - sourced from manufacturer datasheets. Where a specification cannot be established from a maker's own documentation, the site renders it as unverified rather than guessing from the product title. That distinction is not cosmetic: a drive's CMR-or-SMR status changes whether it belongs in a RAID array, and sellers routinely omit it.

On top of the catalogue we publish measured indices: cost-per-terabyte floors and medians by category, in-stock breadth, and a matched-model price index that compares each listing against its own prior price. Those feed the trend pages, the storage crisis tracker, the price forecast and the research reports.

What the site deliberately does not do

No benchmark claims. We do not own a test lab and we do not publish throughput, IOPS or endurance numbers as though we had measured them. Where a performance figure appears it is attributed to the manufacturer that published it.

No unverified figures. External statistics carry a source, a date and a link, or they do not appear. When a figure fails verification it is dropped rather than softened - the forecast pages record which figures were omitted and why, which is a stranger thing to publish than the figures themselves and a more useful one.

No invented authors. There are no fabricated reviewer personas, no stock-photo bylines and no fictional test benches. Research is published under DatacenterDisk Research, which is the site's own editorial line rather than a person who does not exist.

No prediction of prices. The forecast pages give a dated, directional outlook with an explicit list of what would prove it wrong. They never print a future price or a percentage we cannot compute from data we hold.

No data redistribution. There is no public API and no machine-readable feed. Price data reaches this site under a licence limited to display here, so we are not able to grant reuse rights over it. Figures may be cited with a link in the ordinary way; bulk republication is not ours to permit.

How it is funded

DatacenterDisk earns commission through the Amazon Associates programme when a reader buys after following a link from the site. That is the only revenue source, it is disclosed in the footer of every page, and it does not touch the rankings: tables are ordered by cost per terabyte computed from price alone, and a product cannot pay to place. A refurbished drive that beats a new one on price appears above it.

The clearest test of that is what we do when the incentive and the reader conflict. Product pages for drives that go out of stock are retired rather than left standing with a dead buy button, and a listing whose identity does not match its own record is removed from sale surfaces even when it is producing clicks. Our methodology sets out the checks that enforce this.

Corrections are welcome and are treated as the most valuable mail the site receives. If a price, a specification or a claim on any page is wrong, tell us what and where; we would rather change a page than defend it.
