Compatible Drives for UniFi UNAS - Verified + Priced
Ubiquiti publishes no approved-drive list. Its written requirement for a 3.5-inch bay is a 1TB or larger CMR drive at 7200RPM, and any drive meeting it qualifies. Of the 129 in-stock SATA hard drives at 1TB or larger we track, 34 meet that specification on evidence we hold today.

UniFi publishes a rule, not a list
Every other manufacturer in this section answers the compatibility question by naming models. Ubiquiti answers it by naming a standard. Its support article, UniFi Storage Requirements and Compatibility, gives a four-row table keyed by storage type, and for spinning disks it says this, verbatim:
“1TB or larger CMR drive with 7200RPM read/write speeds. 5400RPM is not recommended for multi-bay consoles in RAID 5/6/10 or using ZFS.”
That is the whole gate. There is no model list behind it, no tested-with programme, and therefore no way for a drive to be unsupported by omission. Ubiquiti does sell its own drives - the article names an “Official UniFi HDD: 8/16/24TB” as recommended - but recommended is doing very different work here than on a Synology page, where an unlisted hard drive on a current Value or J-series machine cannot create a storage pool at all.
The consoles the clause covers are Standard Rack-Mounted Consoles (e.g. UNVR-Pro, UNAS-Pro, UDM-Pro), UNVR Instant. If you are filling a UNAS Pro, this is the sentence that governs your purchase.

Every drive that meets it, priced
Because the requirement is a rule rather than a list, we can compute the answer instead of transcribing it. The table below is every in-stock SATA hard drive of 1TB or more that we can independently evidence as CMR and 7200RPM, cheapest per terabyte first. It changes when the market changes, not when a manufacturer updates a document.
Read those four numbers together. 62 of the 129 drives are missing from the final column because we hold no verified recording-technology or spindle-speed record for them - not because they failed the test. A drive we have not measured is left out rather than assumed to pass.

What it costs to fill one today
The cheapest qualifying terabyte on the list right now is the WD Ultrastar 12TB SATA HUH721212ALE601 at $28.33 per terabyte, $ 339.99 for 12TB. A seven-bay UNAS Pro filled with that drive is roughly $2380 of media before redundancy, which on a single-parity array leaves you about 72TB usable.
Whether that is the right drive is a separate question from whether it qualifies. The specification is a floor, not a ranking: a drive can meet every clause and still be a poor choice for a machine that never spins down. What the specification does give you, which no other vendor in this section offers, is the freedom to make that judgement yourself.
The other three storage classes
The same article covers everything else Ubiquiti gear takes. The clauses are short and worth reading in full before buying, because two of them contain requirements people routinely miss.

The endurance clause is the trap. A great many consumer SATA and NVMe drives sit below 0.3 DWPD, and Protect writes continuously by design, so a drive chosen on price alone can fall short of Ubiquiti's own stated minimum without ever appearing incompatible. Nothing will refuse to mount; it will simply wear faster than the warranty assumes.
How this compares with the rest of the market
Placed beside the other manufacturers we track, Ubiquiti sits at one end of a real spectrum. At the other end is Synology, which on 2025-and-later Value and J-series machines will not create a storage pool on a drive absent from its list - and lists no third-party hard drive at all. Between them, QNAP publishes a large per-machine list and annotates what it has not tested without blocking anything, while TerraMaster and Asustor publish series-level lists that function as advice.
None of these is straightforwardly wrong. Testing costs money, and a manufacturer that validates a drive is offering you something real. The distinction that matters to a buyer is whether the list is a recommendation or a lock, because only one of those also decides who you are allowed to buy from. Ubiquiti's answer is a recommendation, written down, which is why this page could be computed at all.

Frequently asked questions
Does UniFi have an approved drive list?
No, and that appears to be deliberate. Ubiquiti's storage article publishes a requirement instead: for 3.5-inch bays, a 1TB or larger CMR drive at 7200RPM. There is no list of tested models to be on or off, so no drive can be 'unsupported' for being absent from one. It is the most permissive posture of any NAS maker we track.
Will a 5400RPM drive work in a UNAS Pro?
Ubiquiti's own wording is that 5400RPM 'is not recommended for multi-bay consoles in RAID 5/6/10 or using ZFS'. That is guidance rather than a block - it does not say the drive is rejected. Since a UNAS Pro is a multi-bay console and most people run it in a redundant mode, the recommendation applies to the normal case, which is why our table below enforces 7200RPM.
Do I have to buy Ubiquiti's own hard drives?
No. Ubiquiti sells an official UniFi HDD in 8, 16 and 24TB and names it as recommended, but the published requirement is written so that any qualifying drive satisfies it. This is the clearest contrast with Synology, whose newer Value and J-series machines will not create a storage pool on an unlisted hard drive at all.
What about SSDs and NVMe in UniFi gear?
The same article covers them. A 2.5-inch SATA SSD must be at least 1TB and draw no more than 5V, and for Protect it needs DRAM cache and at least 0.3 DWPD endurance. NVMe drives need the M.2 tray and are described as compatible with all SSDs, with performance limited to PCIe Gen3 x2. The DWPD requirement is the one people miss - plenty of consumer drives fall under it.
How is this page different from your other compatibility pages?
Every other page in this section transcribes a vendor list and tells you what is on it. This page cannot do that, because there is no list. Instead it computes: it takes Ubiquiti's published rule and applies it to drives that are in stock right now, so the answer changes as the market changes rather than as a manufacturer updates a document.
