What QNAP's list actually commits to
QNAP is unusually direct about this, and the wording is worth reading closely because it settles the question most buyers are really asking. On its compatibility page it says:
“QNAP customer service is unable to provide technical support for devices not listed on the QNAP compatibility list.”
That is a statement about the support desk, not about the hardware. Nothing in it says an unlisted drive will fail to work, and in practice it does not - the TS-673A will initialise a drive QNAP has never tested and build a volume on it. What you forfeit is the right to call QNAP about it.
Its recommendation is phrased the same way:
“To ensure optimal compatibility and performance, please use devices included in the compatibility list.”
Please use is not you must use. And the clearest evidence of the posture is that QNAP itself offers a way around its own list, linking one compiled from customer reports: “Click here to check unofficial (reported by users) compatibility list.” A manufacturer that intended its list to be a gate does not publish a door beside it.

The families at the top are the NAS and enterprise lines, which is the useful signal in the table. QNAP is not telling you a desktop drive will fail; it is telling you where it spent its testing budget, and it spent it where the drives are designed to run continuously.
How this compares with the other manufacturers
QNAP sits in the middle of a real spectrum, and the middle is a defensible place to be.
At one end, Ubiquiti publishes no list at all, only a specification - 1TB or larger, CMR, 7200RPM - and any drive meeting it qualifies. At the other, Synology will not create a storage pool on an unlisted hard drive on its 2025-and-later Value and J-series machines, and lists no third-party hard drive at all. QNAP tests widely, publishes the result per machine, tells you support depends on it, and blocks nothing.
For a buyer the practical difference is what the list decides. QNAP's decides who answers the phone. Synology's, on those machines, decides who you can buy from.
Is QNAP's list really per-machine? We checked
Every page in this section has said QNAP publishes a genuinely different list for each machine. Until all three six-bay captures existed, the only evidence for that was three different row counts - and three counts of 390, 676 and 437 are equally consistent with one list truncated three ways. With the rows in hand the claim is checkable, so we checked it.

The comparison is on distinct part numbers, not rows, because QNAP publishes one row per firmware revision - a raw row count would record the same drive twice on one machine and once on another and read that difference as disagreement.

Across all three machines QNAP names 685 distinct hard drives, and only 116 of them appear on every list. The weakest pair overlaps by 19.2%. These are three six-bay machines from one manufacturer, so bay count plainly is not what drives the list - product generation is.
The TS-673A carries the longest list of the three, 676 rows, and it is the only one where Seagate leads the brand mix rather than WD. It is an AMD Ryzen machine and the breadth shows: 305 of its part numbers appear on no other list we hold. If you are choosing between these three chassis on drive flexibility alone, this is the one with the widest tested field - though on all three an unlisted drive builds a volume anyway.
For the TS-673A specifically: 288 part numbers shared with the TS-664, and 376 part numbers shared with the TS-653D. If you own more than one QNAP, that is how much of a bulk drive order carries across.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to use a drive from QNAP's list in the TS-673A?
No. QNAP's list is advisory, and QNAP says so in its own terms: "QNAP customer service is unable to provide technical support for devices not listed on the QNAP compatibility list." That withholds support, not function - an unlisted drive still initialises and builds a volume. QNAP even links a separate list of drives reported working by users, which is not something a manufacturer does if it intends the official list to be a gate.
How many drives does QNAP list for the TS-673A?
676 rows, which fold to 593 distinct part numbers once QNAP's per-firmware duplicates are merged, read from QNAP's own compatibility tool with the machine selected. We captured all three six-bay machines in full and compared them: only 116 part numbers appear on all three lists out of a combined 685, and the weakest pair - TS-664 against TS-653D - overlaps by just 19%. QNAP's per-machine lists are per-machine in substance, not just in presentation.
What does QNAP actually promise about a listed drive?
Testing, and support if something goes wrong. Its wording is "To ensure optimal compatibility and performance, please use devices included in the compatibility list." - a recommendation rather than a requirement. The practical value is that if you call QNAP about a problem with a listed drive, the conversation starts with your problem rather than with your drive choice.
Is an unlisted drive risky?
Less than the phrasing suggests, but not zero. The real risks are the ones that apply to any NAS drive: shingled recording behaving badly during a rebuild, or a desktop drive with aggressive head-parking cycling itself to death in a machine that never idles. Those are properties of the drive, not of its presence on a list. Check recording technology first - our CMR or SMR resolver covers that - and treat the list as a convenience.
Can I mix drive brands and capacities in the TS-673A?
Mixing brands is normal and generally fine. Mixing capacities is where you lose something: in a standard RAID array every member is used only up to the size of the smallest, so a 16TB drive in an array of 8TB drives contributes 8TB. QNAP's own storage pool features can reclaim some of that, but the simple answer is that matched capacities waste nothing.
How does this compare with Synology?
They are close to opposites. QNAP publishes a large per-machine list, tells you plainly that support depends on it, and lets the hardware accept anything. Synology, on its 2025-and-later Value and J-series machines, will not create a storage pool on an unlisted hard drive at all - and lists no third-party hard drive. One posture affects who you call when it breaks; the other affects who you are allowed to buy from.
