Shuckable External Drive Deals - Prime Big Deal Days 2026
Live prices updated · 18 in-stock products · tracked since March 23, 2026 · prices in this category are re-checked about once a day on a rolling cycle - the time above is our newest price, not every row's
Running now through October 7. Next deal drop: 1 p.m. PT.
Desktop external drives - Seagate Expansion, WD Elements and their kin - with the shucking arithmetic computed live: the external's price per terabyte beside the cheapest new bare drive at the same capacity. 4 of 18 sit at or near their own recorded low today, each against its own record.
We measure every price against that item's OWN recorded history, not against a list price - list prices get raised before a sale, which is documented and cited on this site's event pages. A verdict badge means: AT/NEAR LOW is close to the lowest price we recorded for that item over the days we tracked it in the last 30 - each badge prints that number of days - in a record where its price has actually moved (a price that has not moved is not a low, and reads TYPICAL); TYPICAL is ordinary for it; ELEVATED is above where it usually sits; NEW means we have not tracked it long enough to say. No percentage-off-list figure appears anywhere on this site as a measure of whether a price is actually good.
The evidence for why we do it this way is our own: the June 2026 Prime Day retrospective measured whether the last comparable event moved prices, category by category, before any of these pages were written.
Live shuckable external drives picks, verdict-badged
Today's verdict distribution: 4 of 18 in-stock items are at or near their own recorded low today; 12 are typical for themselves; 2 are elevated above their own usual price. Each count compares an item with its own recorded price; no past price is printed for any listing.

New against new on both sides, current prices only. The price is half the question - warranty and which drive is inside are the other half; see the shucking guide.
What shucking saves, and what it costs
Shucking means buying an external drive for the bare drive inside it. When the external costs less per terabyte than the cheapest new bare drive at the same capacity, the difference is the saving. The table below computes that difference live at every capacity, from the same data as our shucking guide.
The cost is the warranty: opening the enclosure can void it, and the drive inside is not guaranteed to be any particular model. Our guide covers both.
Desktop drives only
Desktop externals hold 3.5-inch drives, the kind a NAS takes. Portable externals hold 2.5-inch drives and are a different question, so they are not on this page; they are on our external drives page.
What June's Prime Day measured for this category
Our June 2026 retrospective measured External HDD. On the matched-model index, where each listing is compared only with its own earlier price, the category moved an unmeasurable amount from the 30 days before the event through its last day (2026-06-23 to 2026-06-26), with at least 0 listings matched at every step. Among listings whose price had actually moved, 66.7% sat at their own recorded low during the event (3 listings), against 66.7% in an ordinary week - no more lows than usual.
Only 3-5 listings were tracked per day in June 2026 - directional, not a settled reading.
The trap: the drive inside is not the one on the box
An external's listing names the external, not the drive in it. Makers fill the same enclosure with different internal models over time, so a shucked drive may not match a review or a forum post about the same external. Plan for whatever comes out.
A shucking saving can disappear between drops. The comparison is live: when the bare drive at a capacity gets cheaper, the saving shrinks. The table always shows today's arithmetic, not a saving we saw earlier.

Frequently asked questions
Is shucking still worth it during Prime Big Deal Days?
Only where the table shows it: at each capacity we compare the external's price per terabyte with the cheapest new bare drive, live. Where the bare drive is cheaper, shucking loses money and the warranty.
When is Prime Big Deal Days 2026?
October 6-7, 2026, starting at 12:01 a.m. Pacific time on October 6 and running 48 hours. Announced by Amazon on September 14-15, 2026.
What time do deals drop?
Amazon's own announcement states new deals launch three times a day during the event: 12:01 a.m., 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Pacific time. The status banner above shows the next scheduled drop once the event is live.
Do I need Amazon Prime for these deals?
Yes, per Amazon's own terms: Prime Big Deal Days deals are exclusive to Prime members. A free trial is available through Amazon directly if you are not already a member; we do not sell or administer Prime membership.
Should I wait for Black Friday instead?
That depends on the category, not the calendar. Check the verdict badge on the specific item you want in both events rather than assuming one event is categorically better - our Black Friday storage deals page uses the same live-data approach for that event, and enterprise and refurbished drives rarely move much for either sale (see the section below).
