A desktop KVM switch moves one set of keyboard, mouse and monitors between computers on the same desk. KVM over IP does something different: it captures a machine's video and sends keyboard and mouse input over the network, so you can reach a server's BIOS or boot screen from a browser when the operating system is not running. We list them in separate tables.
Servers with a vendor management controller (iDRAC, iLO, IPMI) may already have remote console access; our server guides cover that. KVM over IP is for machines without it - mini PCs, desktops and home-lab boxes.
Video connectors and monitor count
A KVM switch has to carry the video your monitors and computers use. The Spec cell prints the connectors each title names - HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C - and the number of monitors it claims to drive. A dual-monitor switch needs two video cables from each computer.

The trap: a remote console that needs the network it is meant to rescue
A KVM-over-IP device is reached over the network, so it shares the network's failures. It helps when a machine's operating system will not boot; it does not help when the network itself is down.
Put it on a network path you can still reach when the server you are rescuing is not.
Before you buy: the honest version
