2TB is the sweet spot for PS5 SSD upgrades in 2026. This capacity delivers the best $/GB in the current PS5 SSD market, fits GTA 6 comfortably with room for 15-20 other AAA titles plus indies, and satisfies most players for the full life of the PS5 generation. Every credible PS5 SSD line offers a 2TB variant — Samsung 990 PRO, WD Black SN850P and SN850X, Crucial P510, Seagate FireCuda 530R, Corsair MP600 Pro LPX, Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus-G, PNY XLR8. This is the recommended default for 2026 buyers.
GTA 6 (~250GB) plus 15-20 other AAA titles (~80GB each) plus indies fit comfortably on 2TB. Most PS5 owners with typical libraries will land at this capacity for the remainder of the console generation. Delivers the best $/GB across all PS5 SSD capacities in 2026. Appropriate for the vast majority of PS5 owners — this is our recommended default.
After the PS5's ~6% file system overhead, a 2TB drive delivers approximately 1,880GB of usable capacity. What that translates to in real games depends on library composition — modern AAA installs vary from 50GB (smaller titles, well-optimized indies) to 200GB+ (Call of Duty; GTA 6 is estimated at 150-200GB, unconfirmed) with an 80-100GB average for most current-gen releases.
Casual and indie games (~50GB average): approximately 37 titles
Standard AAA titles (~80GB average): approximately 23 titles
Heavy AAA titles (~100GB, like Call of Duty or GTA 6): approximately 18 titles
GTA 6 (~250GB with day-one patch): ✓ fits with ~1,630GB remaining
Use the PS5 storage calculator to model your specific library composition. If you have narrowed it to Samsung, the 990 Pro family page prices every capacity and both heatsink variants side by side.
2TB for GTA 6
For GTA 6 specifically, 2TB is the sweet spot. GTA 6 at ~250GB leaves approximately 1.6TB for 15-20 other AAA titles — a complete modern PS5 library plus indies with room for GTA Online expansion updates over 2027-2028. This is our top recommendation for GTA 6 buyers.
GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026. Buy your upgrade in the weeks ahead of launch to avoid the demand spike that historically hits PS5 SSD pricing at major AAA releases. See the full GTA 6 storage upgrade guide.
Heatsink note
Every 2TB PS5 SSD needs a heatsink — Sony's requirement, not optional. Buy a 2TB drive with a factory-integrated heatsink (Samsung 990 PRO Heatsink, WD Black SN850P, Corsair MP600 Pro LPX) or pair a bare drive with a separate PS5-compatible heatsink from Sabrent or a similar accessory brand. Total drive-plus-heatsink height must be ≤11.25mm to fit the expansion compartment cover. See the heatsinks guide for current picks.
Heatsink is one spec; cache architecture is a separate one the table above does not show. See DRAM cache vs DRAM-less, explained for which of these 2TB drives carry a DRAM cache, which use Host Memory Buffer instead, and which rely on SLC caching alone — sourced per model, not inferred from price tier.
The cheapest 2TB PS5-compatible SSD on DatacenterDisk right now is the Corsair MP600 CORE XT 2TB M.2 PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD at $219.50 ($0.110/GB). Prices update about once a day; check the live table above for the current winner.
Is 2TB enough for GTA 6 on PS5?
Yes, 2TB is the recommended sweet spot for GTA 6. It fits GTA 6 comfortably plus 15-20 other AAA titles plus indies. Delivers the best $/GB across all PS5 SSD capacities in 2026.
Are 2TB PS5 SSDs Gen4 or Gen5?
All 2TB PS5-compatible SSDs use PCIe Gen4 x4. Gen3 does not meet the 5,500 MB/s minimum read speed PS5 requires. Gen5 drives work in PS5 but run at Gen4 speeds — no performance benefit for the price premium.
Do 2TB PS5 SSDs need a heatsink?
Yes. Sony requires cooling for all M.2 expansion slot drives regardless of capacity. Either buy a 2TB SSD with a factory-integrated heatsink (Samsung 990 PRO Heatsink, WD Black SN850P, Corsair MP600 Pro LPX) or add a separate PS5-compatible heatsink from Sabrent or similar accessory brands. Total drive-plus-heatsink height must be ≤11.25mm.
How many games fit on a 2TB PS5 SSD?
On approximately 1,880GB of usable capacity after formatting overhead: about 37 indie/casual games at 50GB average, or about 23 standard AAA titles at 80GB average, or about 18 demanding AAA titles at 100GB average (Call of Duty, GTA 6). Real-world results depend on your specific library composition.
What's the best 2TB PS5 SSD for GTA 6?
For GTA 6, the best 2TB PS5 SSD combines Gen4 NVMe, ≥5,500 MB/s sequential read, integrated heatsink (or add-on), and DRAM cache. Top picks include Samsung 990 PRO with Heatsink 2TB, WD Black SN850P 2TB (PS5 licensed), and Corsair MP600 Pro LPX 2TB. Live $/GB ranking above shows the current winner.
