Why base PS5 storage isn't enough
The stock PS5 ships with 825GB of storage that formats down to approximately 667GB of usable space after the operating system, system reserved partitions, and firmware update workspace. PS5 Slim uses the same 825GB SSD with roughly 850GB usable due to different partition layout. PS5 Pro ships with 2TB internal storage (~1.86TB usable), reducing the upgrade urgency but not eliminating it.
Large current games take a substantial share of that space each, and a base PS5 with a few of them installed has little headroom for updates. How much GTA 6 will add is unknown until Rockstar publishes a size.
PS5 Pro owners have more room to start with, but a large library fills any drive eventually. The M.2 expansion slot is Sony's official answer, and 2026 is the year to use it.
