Before you begin

Confirm your SSD is PS5-compatible before starting installation. Requirements: PCIe Gen4 x4 interface, sequential read speed ≥5,500 MB/s, heatsink (total height ≤11.25mm), 2280 form factor. Any Gen3 drive or drive without a heatsink is unsuitable. See the compatibility guide for the full requirement list.

You need: the SSD (with heatsink attached — either factory-integrated or you attach it manually), a #1 Phillips screwdriver, and 10-15 minutes of quiet workspace. Ground yourself by touching a metal object before handling the SSD to discharge static electricity.

The 9 steps

  1. STEP 1
    Power off the PS5 completely

Fully shut down the PS5 — do not just enter Rest Mode. Hold the power button until you hear two beeps. Unplug the power cable and all peripheral cables. Wait at least 60 seconds for any residual charge in the console's power supply to dissipate. Move the PS5 to a well-lit, flat, static-free workspace. A dining table or desk with a soft cloth beneath works well.

  2. STEP 2
Position the PS5 for panel removal

For original PS5 and PS5 Pro: lay the console flat on its side with the PlayStation logo facing up (the side without the logo is the side you'll remove). For PS5 Slim: lay it flat with the disc drive facing up if you have the disc version, or with the button side facing up if digital. This orientation gives access to the expansion slot cover screw.

  3. STEP 3
    Remove the outer panel

Original PS5 and Pro: grip the top-front corner and gently lift while sliding the panel away from the console — the panel snaps off with a single motion. Do not force it if it resists; check the orientation. PS5 Slim: the top panel is held by a small clip; slide it away from the disc drive after releasing the clip. Set the panel aside.

  4. STEP 4
    Locate the M.2 expansion slot

The expansion slot is under a small silver cover held by a single Phillips head screw. It's a rectangular compartment approximately 4x2 inches. Use a #1 Phillips screwdriver to remove the single screw (keep it — you'll need it). Lift off the silver cover to expose the M.2 slot. Inside you'll see the M.2 socket at one end and a screw hole with a small brass standoff at the other end.

  5. STEP 5
    Prepare your SSD and heatsink

If your SSD ships with a factory-integrated heatsink (Samsung 990 PRO Heatsink, WD Black SN850P, Corsair MP600 Pro LPX), the drive is ready to install as-is. If you bought a bare drive and separate heatsink, follow the heatsink manufacturer's instructions to attach the heatsink to the drive — typically peel a thermal pad backing and press the heatsink onto the drive. Total drive-plus-heatsink height must be ≤11.25mm to fit under the PS5 cover.

  6. STEP 6
Insert the SSD into the M.2 slot

Hold the SSD at approximately a 30-degree angle with the notched connector end facing the M.2 socket. Slide the connector into the socket firmly — it should go in smoothly. Push down on the SSD until the far end contacts the brass standoff. If your SSD's screw hole doesn't align with the standoff, verify you have a 2280 form-factor drive (the length in the mm designation — 2280 means 22mm wide by 80mm long).

  7. STEP 7
Secure the SSD with the small screw

Use the small screw from the standoff (or the screw included with your PS5-compatible drive) to secure the SSD to the standoff. Hand-tight is sufficient — do not overtighten, as this can damage the standoff threads or the SSD's PCB. If your PS5 model has a movable standoff for supporting different M.2 lengths, verify it's positioned for 2280 before installing.

  8. STEP 8
Replace the expansion slot cover and outer panel

Place the silver expansion slot cover back over the M.2 slot and secure with the Phillips screw. Verify the cover sits flush — if it doesn't close cleanly, the heatsink is too tall and needs to be replaced with a lower-profile alternative (do not force it). Replace the PS5 outer panel by sliding it back into position; you should hear or feel it click into place.

  9. STEP 9
    Reconnect and power on

Reconnect the power cable and any peripheral cables. Press the power button. PS5 boots normally and detects the new drive automatically. A dialog appears asking if you want to format the M.2 SSD for PS5 use — accept. Formatting takes 60-120 seconds. Once complete, the drive appears in Settings → Storage → M.2 SSD and is ready for game installs. Move existing games to the new drive from Settings → Storage if desired.

After install — moving games and setting default install location

To move existing games from PS5 internal storage to the new M.2 drive, navigate to Settings → Storage → Console Storage → Games and Apps → Items You Can Move to M.2 SSD Storage. Select the games you want to move and confirm. Movement runs in the background and takes several minutes per AAA game. You can play other games during movement.

To set new game downloads to install on the M.2 drive by default: Settings → Storage → Installation Location → M.2 SSD Storage. This is the recommended setting for most buyers — it saves the internal drive for the most-played titles and system updates while directing new installs to the expansion space.

Games installed on the M.2 SSD load at PS5's custom I/O speeds — identical to games on the internal drive. No performance penalty. All PS5 features (ray-traced 60fps modes, Dual Sense haptics, activity cards, save data cloud sync) work identically whether the game is installed internally or on the M.2 expansion.

Troubleshooting

PS5 does not detect the SSD: Verify the drive is fully seated in the M.2 socket (check the connector alignment) and the standoff screw is secured. Confirm the drive is Gen4 NVMe — Gen3 drives are rejected. Check the drive is 2280 form factor, not 2242 or another length. Try the drive in a different M.2-capable system to verify it's not defective.

Format fails or times out: Verify the drive meets the 5,500 MB/s read speed requirement in its official spec sheet. Some drives that advertise Gen4 x4 but use aggressive power management (particularly QLC without DRAM cache) fail PS5's format speed test. If format repeatedly fails, the drive is likely incompatible — return for a refund and replace with a drive that meets the full PS5 requirement list.

Cover does not close cleanly: The heatsink is too tall — total drive-plus-heatsink height must be ≤11.25mm. Do not force the cover closed. Remove the heatsink and replace with a lower-profile alternative, or return the drive-plus-heatsink for a factory-integrated option that is guaranteed to fit.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to install a PS5 SSD?

The entire process takes 8-12 minutes for a first-time installer — 4-6 minutes of physical hardware work plus 1-2 minutes of PS5 auto-format and 2-3 minutes of setup dialog. Experienced installers can complete the hardware work in under 3 minutes.

Do I need special tools to install a PS5 SSD?

Just a #1 Phillips head screwdriver. The single screw securing the expansion slot cover is standard Phillips. Some installers prefer a magnetic tip to catch the small screw if it drops, but this is optional. No spudgers, plastic prying tools, or specialized hardware needed.

Does installing an SSD void the PS5 warranty?

No. Sony officially supports M.2 NVMe expansion. The expansion slot is user-accessible with a single-screw cover and requires no unusual disassembly. Installing a compatible drive does not void your PS5 warranty. The warranty could be voided if you damage the console during installation (over-torqued screws, forcing incompatible hardware) or open other sealed panels not intended for user access.

Can I install the SSD without a heatsink?

Sony's compatibility documentation requires a heatsink. PS5 will format an unheatsinked drive, but sustained performance suffers under long game installs and drive life shortens through thermal cycling. Always install with a heatsink — either factory-integrated or a separate PS5-compatible option. See the heatsinks guide for current picks.

Does PS5 Slim install differently?

PS5 Slim uses a different outer panel design (clip-based rather than snap-fit) but the M.2 expansion slot itself is functionally identical. The steps are the same after panel removal. Slim's tighter expansion compartment means bulky third-party heatsinks may not fit — use factory-integrated heatsinks or low-profile alternatives for Slim.

How do I move games to the new M.2 SSD?

Settings → Storage → Console Storage → Games and Apps → Items You Can Move to M.2 SSD Storage. Select games to move and confirm. Movement runs in the background and takes several minutes per AAA game. You can play other games during movement. New game downloads can be directed to M.2 storage in Settings → Storage → Installation Location.
