The table above is the whole family in one place: three models, four capacities between them, and two physical variants of most of them. That last dimension is the one that trips people up. The heatsink and bare versions of the same drive at the same capacity are different products with different Amazon listings and different prices, and they move independently. Treating them as one row would hide the thing you most need to see.
What that independence produces is not what most buying guides assume. The intuitive model is that the heatsink adds a fixed amount over the bare drive, so you decide whether the cooler is worth that surcharge. In practice, at several capacities in this family right now, the heatsink version is the cheaper of the two. That is not a mistake in our data and it is not a bargain that will necessarily last; it is what happens when the bare SKU is stocked mainly by third-party sellers and the heatsink SKU is not, or vice versa. The premium table below computes the actual difference at every capacity where both variants are buyable, with the sign as it falls.
There is a second reason to look at the bare listing that has nothing to do with price. Samsung's own datasheet for the 990 PRO with Heatsink states that product warranty will be void if a heatsink is removed from 990 PRO with Heatsink, and adds that the pre-installed heat sink should not be removed as it can damage the device. That makes the factory heatsink a permanent commitment: it cannot be taken off to clear a motherboard shroud or a tight chassis without giving up the warranty. Buying the bare drive and adding a separate cooler leaves that option open, and on the rows where the bare listing is already the cheaper of the two, the bare path is both cheaper and free of that constraint. The second thing the matrix shows is where the family simply has holes. Not every capacity exists in every model, and not every capacity that exists is in stock. Where a cell is empty it is empty because nothing is currently buyable there, not because we stopped looking, and the sibling tables below print those gaps rather than quietly skipping the row. In a market this disturbed, knowing that a size is unavailable is as useful as knowing its price.
Prices in the tables are what the listing costs today, refreshed every few hours. Cost per terabyte is computed from that price and the drive's real capacity, which is worth stating because multi-packs exist in this category and a two-pack priced as a single unit produces a cost per terabyte that is wrong by exactly a factor of two. We exclude multi-pack listings for that reason.
The platform question is settled by interface facts, not by preference, and it is the fastest way to narrow this family from three models to one. Sony's published requirements for PS5 storage expansion specify a PCIe Gen4 M.2 NVMe drive, and they require a heat-dissipation mechanism — either a drive that ships with a heatsink or one you add. That single sentence resolves the PS5 case: a 990 Pro with a heatsink is the fit, and a bare drive plus a compatible aftermarket cooler is the alternative path.
It also resolves what a Gen5 drive does in that slot, which is a question people ask constantly. PCIe is backward compatible by design: a Gen5 device in a Gen4 slot negotiates down and operates at the Gen4 link rate. The drive works. What it does not do is operate at Gen5 rates, because the host does not offer them. So the 9100 Pro in a PS5 is a functioning drive whose Gen5 capability is inert, and the price difference against a 990 Pro is money spent on a capability the console cannot use.
For desktops and laptops the same logic runs the other way. If the slot is Gen4, both the 990 Pro and the 990 EVO Plus are native to it and the choice collapses to the live price gap between them. If the slot is Gen5, the 9100 Pro is the only member of this family that links at Gen5, and whether that is worth paying for depends entirely on the current gap — which, as the comparison page shows, is not consistently positive. Gen5 M.2 host slots remained uncommon in laptops through 2026 according to coverage of the platform rollout, so the Gen5 question is largely a desktop question.
There is one case where the platform does not decide and capacity does. Neither the 990 Pro nor the 990 EVO Plus is manufactured at 8TB. If you need eight terabytes on a single M.2 stick, the 9100 Pro is the only option in this family, and the comparison stops being about generations and becomes about whether that capacity is available at a price you will pay.

The 990 EVO Plus sits below it and is a genuinely different design rather than a slower bin of the same one. Samsung specifies its interface as PCIe Gen 4x4 or Gen 5x2 — four lanes of Gen4 or two lanes of Gen5, whichever the host provides. That dual-mode lane arrangement is unusual and it is the reason the drive can be described as Gen5-compatible without being a Gen5x4 part. We are recording it as Samsung states it and drawing no conclusions from it. The other commonly cited difference between the EVO and Pro lines concerns onboard DRAM, and we are not asserting a value for that field until it is sourced from Samsung's own specification page: our catalogue currently carries it as unverified and the tables say so rather than guessing.
The 9100 Pro is the Gen5 flagship, a PCIe 5.0 x4 part, also in bare and heatsink versions, and it is the only member of the family that reaches 8TB. It is the newest of the three, which matters for a practical reason unrelated to specification: newer listings have shorter price histories, so deal verdicts against them are less settled than for a drive that has been tracked for years.
Where each one belongs is the decoder above. What each one costs against the others, capacity by capacity, is on the two comparison pages, and the answer is less stable than the specifications would suggest.
The 990 Pro has not used one flash generation throughout its life, and if you are comparing a drive you already own against one you are about to buy, that is worth knowing. The original 1TB and 2TB drives shipped on Samsung's 176-layer V7 NAND, as reported in Tom's Hardware's launch review in October 2022. When the 4TB capacity arrived a year later it used the denser 236-layer eighth-generation V8 flash instead, which is what made the higher capacity practical in the same 2280 form factor; that change was documented in review coverage at the 4TB launch in October 2023.
Since then, coverage has reported V8 flash appearing in some later 990 Pro and 990 EVO Plus production as well. We are stating that as some later production and no more strongly, because that is as far as the sourcing goes: there is no public per-serial mapping that lets anyone tell you which flash generation a specific retail box contains before opening it, and we are not going to imply otherwise.
What this does not change is the part of the specification you can hold Samsung to. The endurance rating and the warranty term are set per capacity, and the datasheets carry one TBW figure per capacity rather than one per flash generation. A revision difference does not move the warranty position.
Consumer NVMe prices rose sharply through the 2025-2026 NAND shortage, and coverage through that period repeatedly described popular drives roughly doubling from their earlier lows. That is the context for every figure on this page. A price that looks absurd against what you remember paying is not necessarily a bad listing; it may be an ordinary listing in a market that moved underneath you.
The practical consequence is that percentage-off framing has stopped meaning anything. A discount is measured against a reference price, and when the reference is a list price that was set before the shortage, or reset upward during it, then a large percentage off can still be a poor absolute price. Conversely a small nominal discount on a drive that has genuinely come down can be the best entry in months. Neither is visible from the discount figure alone.
The alternative is to compare a listing against its own tracked history in its own condition, which is what our deals page does. That produces a verdict rather than a percentage: is this listing near the bottom of its own recent range, in the middle of it, or above it. The comparison is per exact ASIN, so the heatsink 2TB is judged against the heatsink 2TB and never against the bare one, because those are separate markets that happen to share a model name.
One caveat worth stating plainly. Where our own price history is short — and it is short for the newest members of this family — a verdict reads as building history rather than as a judgement. We would rather show you that than compute a confident-looking verdict from three days of data.
High prices attract sellers who are not the manufacturer and not an authorised retailer, and this category has a long history of that. The first check is the sold-by line, which is separate from the ships-from line: a listing fulfilled by Amazon can still be sold by a third party, and the seller is who you are actually buying from. On a drive in this price range that distinction is worth thirty seconds of attention.
The second check is the listing itself. Multi-packs, bundles and listings whose titles include market-specific model codes are frequently priced per package rather than per drive, and a headline that looks competitive can be nothing of the sort once you divide it out. Grey-market imports carry model codes for other regions and a warranty position that may not be what you assume. We exclude both from our own tables, and we do it by reading the title rather than by trusting the category.
The third is condition. Renewed and used listings appear alongside new ones in this category and are not always labelled prominently. Our tables label the condition on every row precisely because the same model at the same capacity can appear at three different prices for three different reasons, only one of which is a genuine discount.
There is a manufacturer-provided check for the specific worry this category attracts. Samsung Magician includes a Genuine Authentication feature, described on Samsung's own Magician page as a way to verify the authenticity of your Samsung SSD, with the note that an internet connection is required for authentication; the result is tied to the drive's serial number. It is worth running on arrival rather than months later.
That check is not theoretical. Counterfeit 990 Pros have been documented repeatedly in technology coverage, and Tom's Hardware reported in 2026 that fakes had become convincing enough to pass basic inspection while performing far below the genuine drive, attributing the proliferation to the NAND shortage making bogus deals look plausible. Reporting on those cases notes that Samsung's own utility flags such drives as non-Samsung even when the model name reads 990 PRO, which is precisely the case the authentication feature exists for. All three models in this family carry a five-year limited warranty in Samsung's consumer NVMe range, and that warranty is bounded twice: by elapsed time and by total bytes written. Whichever limit is reached first ends the coverage. For most desktop use the time limit is the one that binds, because ordinary use does not approach the write endurance of a modern consumer drive within five years.
The written-bytes limit is expressed as TBW, terabytes written, and it scales with capacity. Samsung's datasheets put the 990 Pro at 600TB, 1,200TB and 2,400TB for 1TB, 2TB and 4TB, and the 990 PRO with Heatsink carries the same figures in its own separate datasheet. The 990 EVO Plus is rated identically at every shared capacity: 600TB, 1,200TB and 2,400TB. The 9100 Pro follows the same ladder and extends it, at 600TB, 1,200TB, 2,400TB and 4,800TB across 1TB to 8TB. All four documents state the period as five years limited, and all four word the relationship the same way: coverage runs for the stated time period or the TBW, whichever comes first.
One consequence of those figures is worth stating plainly, because it removes an axis people assume exists. The 990 EVO Plus is not the shorter-lived drive. At 1TB, 2TB and 4TB its endurance rating is exactly the 990 Pro's, and so is its warranty term. Whatever separates those two lines, it is not how long Samsung will stand behind them.
What we can state is the shape of the decision. If you are buying for a console or a desktop that writes ordinary amounts of data, the endurance rating is not the constraint and the warranty term is. If you are buying for sustained heavy writes, the endurance rating is the number to check against your actual workload, and it should come from Samsung's specification page for the exact capacity you are buying rather than from any aggregation of it, including ours.
