In a Gen4 machine, both of these drives are native to the slot. Neither is being held back by the host and neither is reaching past it. What changes — constantly, and by more than most people realise — is the gap in price between them, and that gap is what actually decides this purchase for the overwhelming majority of buyers.

The difference people actually ask about is DRAM. The 990 Pro carries an onboard DRAM cache; the EVO line is generally understood to take a different approach. The 990 Pro is sold in a version with a heatsink already fitted, which makes it the straightforward console purchase. The 990 EVO Plus, in the listings we track, is a bare drive, which means a console installation needs an aftermarket cooler designed for the PS5 expansion bay.
