Workload rating is recorded per part number from the manufacturer's published data for that exact model where available, not blanketed across the line — two drives of the same capacity can differ because they are different generations. A dash means the figure is not stated for that listing. Recording technology comes from the manufacturer's published CMR/SMR list; a model absent from that list is shown as UNVERIFIED rather than guessed. Rows priced above 3× this line's in-stock median are flagged and excluded from the winner callout and from every median we compute.
Ultrastar drives turn up under two names and it confuses almost everyone who shops for them. You will see HGST Ultrastar and WD Ultrastar, sometimes on the same listing page at different prices, and the reasonable assumption is that they are different products. They are not. Hitachi's storage division became HGST, Western Digital acquired it in 2012, and the HGST brand was eventually retired while the Ultrastar product name was kept. A drive badged HGST Ultrastar and a drive badged WD Ultrastar belong to the same lineage and the same engineering programme.
What actually distinguishes two Ultrastar listings is the part number, not the badge on the label. The part number tells you the generation, the capacity, the interface and the sector format, and it is the only identifier worth shopping on. Our tables show it on every row for that reason, and the decoder below explains how to read one.
The reliability reputation attached to this lineage is real but worth stating carefully. Backblaze publishes fleet statistics from a very large population of drives, and HGST and Ultrastar models have historically appeared among the lower-failure-rate entries in those published stats. That is a directional observation about one operator's fleet, not a warranty and not a per-model prediction, and we are not going to attach numbers to it. What it explains is why the used-enterprise market treats these drives as the default rather than the gamble.
The engineering detail people quote most is helium. Sealing a drive with helium instead of air is, per WD's own account of the platform, what let it fit more and thinner platters into the same 3.5-inch body than an air-filled design could - a design fact WD attributes to the sealed enclosure, not a benchmark we ran. The He8, He10 and He12 series carry that in the name. Whether those names are simply WD's older branding for what it now sells as the DC HC-series, or something WD has never actually stated, is its own question - see the helium generations page for exactly what we could and could not confirm from WD's documentation, and Ultrastar He12 for the single generation that still dominates 12TB recertified supply, decoded part number by part number. Newer generations add OptiNAND, which uses onboard flash for drive metadata - also a design fact, not a performance claim.
WD Gold comes up constantly in Ultrastar discussions and the relationship is genuinely close. WD positions Gold as its enterprise-class drive for the retail and channel market, and the community has long treated Gold and Ultrastar as near-identical siblings differentiated mainly by which channel they are sold through and what the box looks like.
DatacenterDisk now tracks WD Gold as its own line, with the 26TB WD261KRYZ covered separately from the 26TB Ultrastar HC590. That matters because the capacities are close and both sit in WD's enterprise ecosystem, but the buying channels and interface choices are not identical. Gold is the cleaner retail/channel SATA choice; HC590 is the stronger datacenter procurement reference when you need Ultrastar qualification, SAS variants or WUH-series identification.
For the exact 26TB decision, use the WD Gold 26TB versus Ultrastar HC590 comparison. If both are qualified for your host and both have live stock, price per usable TB can decide it. If your shelf, support contract or spares process calls for Ultrastar, the similar capacity alone is not a reason to substitute Gold.

The decoder table above is built from the drives we actually track rather than hand-written, so it cannot drift from reality. The single most important thing it encodes is the interface, and that is worth dwelling on because it is the mistake that costs people money.
Ultrastar drives ship in SATA and SAS versions of the same capacity, frequently at similar prices, and the listings do not always make the difference obvious. A SAS drive will not work in a normal desktop or in most consumer NAS enclosures — it needs a SAS controller or backplane. Buyers who order on price alone and receive a SAS drive discover this when the machine does not see the disk, and by then it is a return.
The part number tells you before you buy. In the WD and HGST scheme, the letter group after the capacity digits carries the interface: the ALE, ALN, ALA and BLE families are SATA, while AL5, AL4, ALS and CSS are SAS. The same group also encodes the sector format, with 512e and 4Kn variants sold side by side. Every SAS row on this site carries a visible backplane warning for the same reason. It is not a judgement about the drive — SAS Ultrastar drives are excellent and often cheaper per terabyte precisely because fewer buyers can use them — it is a compatibility fact that belongs next to the price rather than three clicks away.
Ultrastar is the flagship brand of the used-enterprise market. Datacenter operators retire drives on a schedule rather than at failure, and those pulls flow into the retail market in volume. The result is that most Ultrastar capacities exist at two very different prices at the same moment: a new price and a refurbished price.
Almost no price comparison shows both. Sites either track new retail and ignore the pull market, or they list refurbished drives without a new-price anchor to judge them against. Neither tells you the thing you actually want to know, which is how much the refurbished route is saving you today at the capacity you need.
The ladder above computes that from live listings on both sides. Each row is the cheapest in-stock new drive at that capacity, the cheapest in-stock refurbished drive, and the spread between them. Where only one track has stock, that row shows the track it has and a dash for the other — we do not imply a saving we cannot compute from two real prices.
The spreads move, and they move more than you would expect. Some capacities show the refurbished route saving a third or more; others compress to almost nothing; and occasionally the refurbished price sits above the new one, which sounds absurd until you remember that a thin refurb supply at one capacity and a promotion on the new drive can cross over for a week. When the ladder shows that inversion, buy new — it is not a data error, it is the market being briefly silly.
The practical use is to check the spread before committing to a route rather than assuming the pull market is always cheaper. It usually is. It is not always, and the difference is worth the ten seconds it takes to look.
A refurbished Ultrastar is almost always a datacenter pull — a drive retired from a fleet on a replacement schedule, tested by a reseller, and relisted. It is not a returned consumer drive and it is not a failed drive that someone repaired. Understanding that is most of what separates a confident refurb buyer from a nervous one.
Power-on hours are the number people fixate on, and the honest position is that pulls commonly carry tens of thousands of hours because that is what a datacenter service life looks like. Reputable sellers disclose a range. The important thing is not the specific figure but that you verify it yourself on arrival rather than trusting the listing, because the one genuinely contentious practice in this market is SMART data being cleared before resale — which removes your ability to see the drive's history at all. A seller who discloses high hours is being straight with you; a drive whose SMART counters are suspiciously blank is telling you nothing, and blank is worse than high.
Warranty on pulls is a seller warranty rather than a manufacturer one, and the tiers vary enormously between resellers. That is a different product from a manufacturer warranty even when the stated term matches, and our refurbished warranty guide covers what each actually obliges. One physical gotcha specific to this market: many enterprise pulls and shucked white-label drives implement the SATA 3.3V power-disable pin, which causes the drive to stay powered down in a PSU that supplies 3.3V on that line. External enclosures have historically contained drives worth more than the enclosure, and WD Elements units have been a long-running example — buyers have reported finding Ultrastar-class white-label drives inside particular models, which is what made shucking a mainstream practice rather than a curiosity.
That is a historical community finding rather than a specification. Contents vary by model, by capacity, by production run and by region, and nothing about it is guaranteed by WD. Anyone telling you a specific external model definitely contains a specific drive is describing what they found in one unit at one moment.

Start with capacity, because it constrains everything else. Then decide your route: the ladder tells you what new and refurbished each cost at that capacity today and what the spread is worth.
Then check the interface on the specific row you are about to buy. SATA unless you know you have SAS infrastructure — and the rows carry the warning so you cannot miss it. Then check the condition badge, because the winner callout labels which track it comes from and a headline price is meaningless without it.
Two things deserve a second look regardless of price. Any row flagged as priced far above the line's typical rate is a real listing from a seller asking a multiple of the going rate; we show it because it exists and exclude it from rankings and aggregates because including it would distort them. And any dash in the workload or warranty column means we could not source that figure from WD, not that the drive lacks the specification — the datasheet for that part number is the authority.

Western Digital separated into two independent public companies in 2025. The hard-drive business kept the Western Digital name and the Ultrastar DC HC hard drives with it. The flash and solid-state business became SanDisk again as a standalone company, taking the Ultrastar DC SSD lines. Both halves kept the Ultrastar brand for their enterprise products, which is why the same family name now appears under two corporate logos.
For a buyer this is a labelling change rather than a product change. Part numbers are unchanged, specifications are unchanged, and a WUS-prefixed drive is the same drive whichever logo the listing carries. What does move is where the datasheet and the warranty process live. Listings created either side of the separation coexist on the marketplace, so seeing both brands for one series is expected and is not a counterfeit signal. Everything above this point is hard drives. Ultrastar also covers enterprise solid-state, and it behaves differently enough to deserve its own page. The DC SN drives are U.2 and U.3 NVMe units in a 2.5-inch 15mm body: they go into a server backplane, not into the M.2 slot on a desktop board, and getting one working outside a server means an adapter and a power feed. That form-factor question catches more buyers than any specification does.
The other difference is that endurance is a property of the exact part number rather than the capacity. The SN640 ships 0.8 DW/D and 2 DW/D versions at overlapping sizes, so two drives with the same model name and the same terabyte figure can be rated more than twice as far apart. And unlike Ultrastar hard drives, there is almost no refurbished market here, so the new-versus-pull spread that runs through the rest of this site has nothing to compare.

It varies by capacity and moves week to week, which is why the ladder on this page computes it live rather than quoting a rule of thumb. Some capacities show a third or more saved; others compress to very little; and occasionally refurbished sits above new when refurb supply is thin at that size. Check the row before choosing a route.
Our tables show a dash because WD's datasheets and product pages did not yield the figure through our fetch path, and we will not print an unsourced specification. The enterprise nearline class these drives sit in is commonly quoted around 550TB/year, but the datasheet for your exact part number is the authority rather than us.
Some have, historically — that is what made shucking mainstream. It is a community finding rather than a guarantee: contents vary by model, capacity, production run and region, and WD promises nothing about them.
