The difference between these tiers is unusually well documented, which makes this an easier comparison than most.
Seagate's SkyHawk datasheet states that the standard line is designed for always-on workloads of 180TB per year and carries a three-year limited warranty. The SkyHawk AI datasheet states 550TB per year and a five-year limited warranty. That is roughly three times the rated workload and two extra years of coverage, both stated by the manufacturer rather than inferred.
The AI tier adds capabilities the standard tier does not claim at all. Seagate states 32 AI channels, and its current AI datasheet quotes figures for real-time capture and compare events per second under stated test conditions — an embedded AI NVR doing 64-channel recording with 16-channel playback at an average picture size of about 250KB. Those are Seagate's numbers under Seagate's conditions and we reproduce them as such rather than converting them into a claim of our own.
Both tiers state support for up to 64 HD cameras, which surprises people. Camera count is not what separates them. The separation is how much total data the drive is rated to absorb in a year and whether the recorder is also reading footage back for analysis while writing.
What neither datasheet supports is a performance comparison, and we do not publish one. The tiers differ in rated endurance, warranty, capacity reach and analytics features, all of which are documented, and that is the whole of the honest case.
The workload rating is the deciding specification, and it is one you can check against your own system in about a minute rather than guessing at.
Start with your per-camera bitrate. Most recorders display it per channel in a status screen. A continuous stream at 4 megabits per second is half a megabyte per second, which over a year is roughly 15.8 terabytes. Multiply by your camera count and you have the annual write volume the drive will see.
Eight cameras at 4 Mbps is about 126TB a year, comfortably inside the standard tier's 180TB rating. Twelve is about 190TB and sits just over it. Thirty is about 473TB and needs the AI tier's rating with room to spare. Those are illustrative figures at a constant bitrate, and real cameras use variable bitrate that rises with movement, so add a margin rather than treating the boundary as precise.
The result is that a large share of home systems genuinely do not need the AI tier, and being told otherwise is being oversold. A four-to-eight camera setup generates a fraction of what the standard line is rated for, and the money saved buys capacity — which converts directly into retention, the thing you actually notice.
Where the arithmetic flips is not usually camera count alone. It is analytics. A recorder running detection on stored footage reads while it writes, which is the pattern the AI tier exists for, and it changes the drive's job from one thing to two.
For a meaningful share of buyers the workload arithmetic never gets run, because capacity decides first.

That threshold is worth knowing precisely because it inverts the usual advice. The standard question is whether the AI tier is worth its premium. Above roughly 12TB the question does not exist, and the real question becomes whether you need that much capacity in one drive rather than across two.
Sometimes you do not. Two standard-tier drives can hold more total footage than one AI drive for less money, and a recorder handles multiple volumes without the complications parity introduces. What you lose is bays, which are finite, and what you gain is the option to buy at two different moments rather than one.
Sometimes you genuinely do. If the bays are full, capacity per drive is the only variable left, and at that point the tier decision has been made for you. Check your recorder's maximum supported drive capacity before assuming the largest drive is available to you at all — that limit is in the recorder's documentation and it is frequently lower than the largest drive on sale.
The table above pairs the cheapest in-stock standard SkyHawk against the cheapest in-stock SkyHawk AI at each capacity where both exist, in the same condition, and prints the gap in dollars and percent.
Two rules shape what appears. Both sides must be in stock at the same capacity, because comparing a stocked drive against an unstocked one measures our catalogue rather than the tier premium. And both sides must be in the same condition, because these lines sell heavily through marketplace sellers and a used drive against a new one measures the used discount rather than the tier gap.
Rows priced far above the line's typical rate are excluded from the comparison entirely. At a capacity where the only listing on one side is a seller asking several times the going rate, the resulting premium would describe that seller rather than the tiers, which is worse than showing nothing.
What that leaves is a short table of comparisons you could act on today. Read the premium as the price of the upgrade rather than as a verdict: a large premium makes the standard tier's case stronger wherever your workload arithmetic allows it, and a small premium makes the AI tier close to free, at which point the longer warranty and higher rating are worth taking regardless.
The premium is not stable across capacities or across weeks, and where the tiers overlap it has occasionally inverted when a standard-tier capacity thinned out. One difference between these tiers does not appear in any marketing comparison and deserves stating plainly, because it is the only difference that can make a drive wrong rather than merely under-specified.
Seagate's SkyHawk datasheet states SMR against ST4000VX013 in the same column block where the other 4TB part, ST4000VX007, is stated as CMR. The SkyHawk SATA product manual for that generation repeats it in its recording-technology section, covering the ST2000VX015 and ST4000VX013 family. Both of those are standard-tier parts and both are currently purchasable.
No equivalent entry exists on the AI side. Every SkyHawk AI part number we have a datasheet for is stated as CMR, and Seagate's recording-technology list places the 32TB under Mozaic HAMR CMR.
So the tiers are asymmetric in a way the workload figures do not capture: buying standard-tier SkyHawk requires checking the badge on the specific part number, and buying AI-tier does not. In a recorder — which writes continuously and overwrites the oldest footage in a loop once full — a shingled drive is the wrong tool at any price, and that check is not optional.

The internet's default answer to any tier question is buy the better one, and on this comparison that answer is wrong often enough to be worth contradicting directly.
If your annual write volume lands well inside 180TB — which a four-to-eight camera system at typical bitrates does — the standard tier's rating is not a compromise. It is the specification the drive was designed against, with margin. Paying the AI premium buys endurance headroom you will never consume, and the same money spent on capacity buys retention you will notice every time you go looking for footage from three weeks ago.
The two extra warranty years are a real benefit and worth weighing honestly. For a drive sitting in a cupboard at home, where replacing it costs an hour, three years is usually enough. For a drive in a locked cabinet at a site you would have to travel to, the calculation is different and the warranty is often the strongest argument for the AI tier regardless of workload.
The case that most clearly justifies the premium is analytics on the recorder rather than camera count. A system reading stored footage back for detection while continuing to write is doing two jobs at once, and that is precisely what the AI tier's rating and channel figures describe.
