Check your server or motherboard's QVL (Qualified Vendor List) and memory specification first: the platform must support DDR4 LRDIMM modules. DDR4 and DDR5 are physically and electrically incompatible — different notch positions, voltages and pin counts — so a DDR4 module only fits a DDR4 platform. Registered (RDIMM/LRDIMM) and unbuffered (UDIMM) modules are also not interchangeable.
ECC (Error-Correcting Code) memory detects and corrects single-bit errors automatically, preventing the silent data corruption and crashes that random bit-flips cause on non-ECC memory. For servers running 24/7 — file servers, hypervisors, databases — ECC is required, which is why every module we track is ECC.
Whichever your platform specifies. RDIMM (registered) is the standard for servers at 1-2 DIMMs per channel. LRDIMM (load-reduced) allows more DIMMs per channel and higher total capacity at slightly higher latency. UDIMM-ECC (unbuffered) is for workstations and entry servers with ECC-capable desktop-class CPUs. This module is a LRDIMM.
For best performance, populate channels evenly with identical modules — same capacity, speed and organization. Mixed modules usually work but force the whole pool to the slowest common speed and can break optimal interleaving. Follow your server's DIMM population order (documented in its manual) rather than filling slots arbitrarily.
The module downclocks automatically to the platform's maximum supported speed — a DDR4-2666 module in a slower board simply runs at the board's speed. Buying faster-than-needed memory is safe and sometimes cheaper per GB; buying slower-than-platform memory sacrifices bandwidth.
Generally yes: DRAM has no wear mechanism comparable to flash or spinning drives, so tested pulls from decommissioned servers are a rational budget choice. Run a memtest86+ pass on installation and watch the ECC error log for the first weeks — a module that passes both is as dependable as new for practical purposes.
