Is a Seagate BarraCuda 1TB Good for a PS4?

It depends entirely on which BarraCuda, and most people asking this are looking at the wrong one. The 3.5-inch BarraCuda models, ST1000DM010 and ST1000DM014, do not physically fit a PlayStation 4. The 2.5-inch ST1000LM048 does fit, and it is a shingled drive, which for a console is an acceptable trade rather than a problem.

The PS4, PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro all take a 2.5-inch SATA drive of 9.5mm or less. A 15mm 2.5-inch drive does not fit, and neither does any 3.5-inch desktop drive.

The fitment question comes first

A PlayStation 4, in all three revisions, takes a 2.5-inch SATA drive with a z-height of 9.5mm or less. That single constraint eliminates most of what people find when they search for a BarraCuda 1TB, because the models that dominate those results are 3.5-inch desktop drives that physically cannot go into the console.

Within Seagate's 2.5-inch BarraCuda range the 1TB models are the ST1000LM048 at 5400rpm and the ST1000LM049 at 7200rpm, both 7mm and both fitting comfortably. The one to avoid on fitment grounds is the ST4000LM024, which is 15mm thick and does not fit a PS4 or most laptops either, despite being a 2.5-inch drive.

So the answer to the literal question is that the drive most people mean does not fit, and the drive that fits is a different product with a different model number. That is the entire reason this site resolves by part number.

The shingled question, which matters less here than you think

Both 1TB 2.5-inch BarraCuda models are shingled, per Seagate's own May 2020 datasheet for the line. On a NAS that would be disqualifying. On a PlayStation 4 it is close to irrelevant, and it is worth being clear about why rather than just reassuring you.

Shingled recording overlaps data tracks like roof tiles to raise density. Reading is unaffected. Writing is affected when the drive has to modify data underneath an existing track, because the tracks laid over it may have to be rewritten too. That penalty is invisible for sequential work and severe for sustained random writing, which is what a rebuild or a resilver actually is.

A console does almost none of that. Installing a game is a long sequential write. Loading one is a read. Save files are tiny. There is no rebuild, no parity, no resilver and no sustained random write workload of the kind that exposes the shingling penalty. The drive spends its life doing exactly the work shingled recording handles well.

What you will notice is that the PS4's own internal drive was never fast to begin with. Replacing a stock 5400rpm drive with another 5400rpm drive gets you capacity rather than a different experience, which is usually what people actually want.

What we would actually do

If the goal is more space for the least money, the ST2000LM015 at 2TB is the model most people should be looking at rather than a 1TB drive. It is the same 7mm 2.5-inch format, it fits, and doubling the capacity for a modest increase in price is the change you will notice, modern game installs make 1TB feel small quickly.

If the goal is a snappier console rather than a bigger one, the honest answer is that a mechanical drive of any capacity is not the upgrade. A 2.5-inch SATA SSD is, and the PS4 supports it directly. One piece of 2026 context that changes the usual advice: the NAND shortage repriced flash sharply, and solid-state storage now costs several times what mechanical storage costs per terabyte. Guidance written before that repricing tells you an SSD is barely more expensive, and that is no longer true. If you are buying capacity, a larger hard drive is the honest value answer; buy the SSD for the boot volume and the random-access work, where it earns its premium on behaviour rather than on price.

What we would not do is buy a 3.5-inch BarraCuda and an external enclosure to work around the fitment problem.
