Usually not. 1TB sits at the worst end of the cost-per-terabyte curve for mechanical drives, and the next capacity up frequently costs only a little more in absolute terms while giving you far better value. Buy 1TB only when something physically constrains you to it.
Mechanical drive pricing does not scale linearly with capacity. A large part of a drive's cost is the mechanism, the motor, the head assembly, the electronics, the enclosure, and that cost is roughly the same whether the platters hold 1TB or 20TB.
The consequence is that small drives carry the fixed cost across very little capacity and land at a poor rate, while larger drives spread it across much more. The difference is not marginal at the bottom of the range: stepping from 1TB to 2TB or 4TB frequently improves the rate substantially for a modest absolute increase.
That is why our tables sort on cost per terabyte rather than on price. The cheapest drive on a shelf is almost never the best value, and 1TB is where that gap is widest.
There are real cases, and it would be lazy to pretend otherwise.
A laptop or console with one bay and a hard size ceiling is the clearest: if 2TB does not fit or is not supported, the argument is over. Some older systems and appliances also cap the capacity they will address.
A machine where the drive is a small dedicated volume, a scratch disk, a dedicated recording target with known bounds, a boot drive for an appliance, has no use for extra capacity, and paying for it is genuinely wasted.
And there is the case of buying now versus buying right: if 1TB is what the budget allows today and the alternative is no drive at all, buy it. The cost-per-terabyte argument assumes you have the choice.
Check the recording technology by part number, not by family name. At 1TB specifically, Seagate sells the conventionally-recorded ST1000DM010 and the shingled ST1000DM014 under the same product name, so the name tells you nothing. WD's WD10EZEX is confirmed conventional by WD's own list.
For a drive this small the technology usually does not matter, because a 1TB drive is rarely going into an array. It matters if you expect the drive to be repurposed later.
One piece of 2026 context that changes the usual advice: the NAND shortage repriced flash sharply, and solid-state storage now costs several times what mechanical storage costs per terabyte. Guidance written before that repricing tells you an SSD is barely more expensive, and that is no longer true. If you are buying capacity, a larger hard drive is the honest value answer; buy the SSD for the boot volume and the random-access work, where it earns its premium on behaviour rather than on price.
The other thing worth checking at this size is whether you actually want a mechanical drive at all. At 1TB the absolute price difference against flash is smaller than at larger capacities, so if this is a system volume, an SSD is worth the step up more than it would be for bulk storage.

For documents and a working set, comfortably. For games, media or anything accumulating, no, single game installs pass 100GB routinely, and photo and video libraries grow without anyone deciding they should. If the drive exists to stop you managing space, 1TB rarely achieves it.
For a system volume, yes. At this capacity the absolute price gap is smaller than at larger sizes, and the responsiveness difference is the most noticeable upgrade in a computer. For bulk storage, a larger hard drive is far better value per terabyte.
