The comparison is not close: 180TB per year against roughly 55, three years of warranty against two, vibration handling, and conventional recording guaranteed across the line rather than varying by model. BarraCuda earns its place outside the array, not inside it.
Workload rating comes first. Seagate rates IronWolf for 180TB per year and positions BarraCuda around 55TB per year at roughly 2400 powered hours annually. A NAS runs 8760 hours a year, so the desktop line is outside its envelope before anything else is considered.
Recording technology comes second, and it is where the model-level detail matters. IronWolf is conventionally recorded across the line, so there is nothing to check. BarraCuda varies: Seagate's datasheet shows the current 1TB, 2TB, 3TB, 4TB, 6TB and 8TB 3.5-inch models as shingled and the 12TB and larger as conventional. A shingled drive in a parity array is the wrong tool at any price.
Warranty is third: three years against two, five on IronWolf Pro. For a drive expected to run continuously for years, that difference is not cosmetic.
Vibration is fourth and least discussed. Several drives spinning in one chassis affect each other, and NAS lines carry sensors and firmware for it where desktop lines generally do not.
It would be dishonest to leave this as a one-sided comparison, because there is a large and legitimate set of purchases where BarraCuda is correct.
A single desktop drive holding a game library, media you have copies of, or a scratch volume is exactly what the line is built for, and the saving over a NAS drive is real money for no practical loss.
A backup target sitting outside the array is another good fit: sequential writes, no parity relationship, no rebuild. If the backup drive fails you replace it and re-run the backup.
The rule that separates the two cases is whether the drive is part of a parity relationship. Inside one, buy IronWolf. Outside one, BarraCuda is frequently the sensible economy.
The price gap between the lines at a given capacity is real but usually smaller than the consequences it insures against. The comparison worth making is not IronWolf against BarraCuda in the abstract but the difference between them against the cost of a failed rebuild.
There is also a capacity argument that frequently dominates both. Fewer, larger drives means fewer components to fail and fewer rebuilds, and cost per terabyte improves with size. Buying larger NAS-rated drives is often better value than buying more desktop drives, even before the reliability argument.

For an array, yes, and the case is not close. You are buying a workload rating more than three times higher, an extra year of warranty, vibration handling, and conventional recording guaranteed across the line rather than varying by model. Outside an array, BarraCuda is frequently the sensible buy.
You can, and the array behaves like its weakest member during a rebuild. If the BarraCuda is one of the shingled models, mixing it in reintroduces the rebuild problem for the whole array, which defeats the point of the other drives being conventional.
It depends on bay count and workload. Pro adds a higher workload rating, five years of warranty and vibration sensors, which matter most in six bays and up or with sustained write activity. A four-bay household NAS generates a fraction of what standard IronWolf is rated for.
Seagate's datasheet shows the 12TB, 16TB, 20TB and 24TB 3.5-inch models as conventionally recorded, which inverts the usual assumption that bigger budget drives are worse. The 1TB through 8TB current models are shingled. Every one has its own verified page here.
