What the extra 8TB buys

The capacity gain is large enough to change system design. Four drives move from 96TB raw to 128TB raw. Eight drives move from 192TB to 256TB. Twenty-four drives move from 576TB to 768TB. Those numbers can decide whether a site fits inside the recorder it already owns.

The gain is not automatically worth any premium. A 33.3 percent capacity increase is economically clean only when the 32TB price premium is near or below that capacity gain, or when avoiding chassis expansion is worth the extra spend.

Drive bays, chassis and controllers

The 32TB case gets stronger when a bay is expensive. A full NVR, a rackmount video server, a new HBA, a second shelf, more rack space and another power path can cost more than the difference between capacities. In those cases, paying for density can reduce the rest of the bill.

The 24TB case gets stronger when bays are open. If the recorder has unused slots or the retention target is modest, buying 24TB at a better live $/TB can be the disciplined choice. Capacity you do not need is not a feature.

Retention math

Retention scales with usable capacity when all other inputs stay fixed. A 32TB drive gives one-third more raw space than 24TB, so the same camera set and bitrate gets roughly one-third more footage before overhead. RAID parity, reserved recorder space and filesystem behavior reduce the usable number.

The real driver remains bitrate. Continuous 4K H.264, high frame rate, busy scenes and all-day recording raise storage needs sharply. H.265, lower frame rate, motion-triggered recording and quieter scenes reduce them.

Power and heat

Seagate's current SkyHawk AI data sheet lists the 32TB model at 8.2W average read/write and 6.7W idle average, while the 24TB model is listed at 7.8W average read/write and 6.3W idle average. The 32TB drive therefore buys more raw capacity with only a small listed power increase, but that is not a blanket promise of lower total system power.

A chassis still has to cool the actual drives installed. Use the data-sheet power numbers for enclosure budgeting and confirm airflow in the finished recorder, especially if the drives sit in a cabinet or wiring closet.

When 24TB is still the better buy

Buy 24TB when the 32TB row is scarce, priced far above its capacity gain, or unsupported by the recorder. A supported 24TB drive that meets retention is better than an unsupported 32TB drive that looks efficient on paper.

24TB also makes sense for phased upgrades. Replacing every disk at once can create same-age failure risk and a large cash outlay. If the system allows mixed volumes rather than parity striping, smaller purchases over time can be operationally cleaner.
