Fanxiang is not a manufacturer of its own silicon - it is a brand that designs and markets drives built around third-party controllers and NAND, sold direct through its own storefront and through Amazon and other marketplaces. ServeTheHome independently prints the same company name - “SHENZHEN FANXIANG INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY CO, LTD” - in its reviews of the S770 and S880, so the registry record and the press record agree on who is behind the brand. ServeTheHome's own framing of the name is blunt: it describes Fanxiang as “essentially a no-name brand as far as much of our readership will be concerned” - their words, not ours, and we quote it because it is the honest starting point for why a page like this exists.

A teardown documents the specific unit ServeTheHome bought and opened on the date printed above it - not a guarantee that every unit sold under that model name since carries the same parts. We looked for a Fanxiang company statement describing its supplier strategy across the wider range and did not find one: not in any of the three reviews above (article body or reader comments), and not on the vendor's own site, which returned a DNS failure on every rendered read attempt this session. What the three teardowns do show, without needing a company quote to say it, is the pattern itself - three different controller vendors and two different NAND suppliers across three models is the observed fact, whatever Fanxiang's internal sourcing policy actually is.
Our own catalogue holds S660, S880R and S790R listings - the “R” suffix on the last two matters. ServeTheHome tested the base S880, not the S880R; those may or may not share a board, and nothing we could read confirms it either way, so we do not present the S880 teardown as a fact about the S880R. The same caution applies to the S790R, which has no independent teardown we could find. Both are carried as unverified in the table below rather than folded into the nearest-named model.
One more finding from the S770 and S880 reviews, because it bears on how much to trust anything the drive itself reports: ServeTheHome checked the drives' self-reported temperature against a thermal camera and found the two did not agree by a wide margin - “this drive lies about its thermal condition,” in the reviewer's words for the S770. The S660, tested separately, did not show the same gap; its self-reported temperature matched the camera. We report this because it is a documented, attributed finding about firmware honesty, not a performance ranking - we make no speed or benchmark comparisons of our own on this page.

The cache distinction - the most useful thing on this page
Three different terms get used loosely in SSD marketing, and they describe genuinely different hardware. DRAM cache is a dedicated memory chip on the board that holds the drive's mapping table, independent of the NAND itself. SLC caching (sometimes “dynamic SLC”) carves out a portion of the same NAND flash and runs it in a lower-density, higher-write-throughput mode as a write buffer - no separate chip, and the cache shrinks as the drive fills. HMB (Host Memory Buffer) is a different mechanism again: a DRAM-less drive borrows a small slice of the host system's own RAM over the NVMe protocol to hold its mapping table instead of carrying a chip for it. None of these is better in the abstract - they are different engineering trade-offs a buyer is choosing between, and which one a given drive uses is exactly the fact a spec sheet tends to bury.

ServeTheHome's teardown found no DRAM chip; the drive's listing title itself reads "NAND SLC Cache." Positive means the premium-tier drive costs more per GB than Fanxiang at that capacity. “Premium tier” is restricted to Samsung 990 PRO (not the cheaper EVO Plus line) and WD Black SN850X, both NVMe-PCIe4 M.2, so the comparison never crosses interface or product tier.
Warranty: the published terms do not agree
Fanxiang's own materials state a warranty term, and that term is not the same figure everywhere it is printed. That inconsistency is the finding, not a gap we can resolve for you.

The same procedure applies whoever sold you the drive: read the SMART attributes before you trust it with anything, and do it inside the return window rather than the warranty period.
Beyond the standard arrival check: confirm the capacity Windows or your PS5 reports matches what you paid for (a mislabelled-capacity drive is the classic budget-storage fraud, and it takes one look at Disk Management to rule out), and watch what happens to write speed once you have copied enough data to fill the SLC cache - a drive with no DRAM and a small cache can fall a long way once that buffer is exhausted, and that is a property of the hardware described above, not a defect.
