Bare drives carry the cheapest live standalone heatsink in their total, because Sony requires one either way. Rows from brands we do not recognise as established storage manufacturers are marked - not an accusation, a flag that you are buying a name without a track record.
Sony publishes what a PS5 expansion drive must be, and the list is short and specific: PCIe Gen4 M.2 NVMe, a sequential read figure of at least 5,500 MB/s, a heat-dissipation structure, and physical dimensions inside published limits including heatsink height.
A drive that meets those requirements satisfies the console. That is the standing position across this cluster and it is worth restating on the page where it saves the most money: the floor is a threshold, not a leaderboard. Buying a drive rated far above it does not buy you a better PS5, because the console asks for a minimum and does not reward exceeding it.
This is requirement logic from Sony's own published specification rather than a benchmark of ours. We do not test drives and we would not rank them on figures the platform does not use. What we can do is take the set of drives that meet the requirement and sort it by what it costs you, which is what the table above does.
The practical consequence is that money is better spent on capacity than on specification. Between a compliant drive at the requirement and a faster compliant drive at the same price, take either; between a smaller fast one and a larger compliant one at the same price, take the capacity.
Three filters sit between the raw price list and the table above, and each of them removes listings that a naive cheapest-first sort would put at the top.

There is a category of listing that is cheap because it is not what it says it is. Capacity that does not exist, controllers that report one thing and deliver another, drives assembled from rejected memory, listings that copy a real product's photographs and specifications wholesale.
The tells are consistent. An unfamiliar brand name, a price meaningfully below everything else at that capacity, a specification sheet that reads like a copy of a better drive, and reviews that are numerous, recent and vague. None of those is proof on its own; together they are a pattern worth respecting.

It is that you should know when you are buying from a name without a track record, and that the saving should be worth the uncertainty to you specifically.
For a console that stores a library you have paid for, the calculus usually favours a known manufacturer. A drive that fails takes the installs with it, and a warranty is only worth what the company behind it is worth.
Sony requires a heat-dissipation structure, so every PS5 drive purchase includes a heatsink whether or not it arrives attached. That makes the honest price of a bare drive the drive plus a heatsink, and the table ranks on that total.
Standalone heatsinks are inexpensive, which means the assembled route is often cheaper - but not always, and the direction changes with stock. Two practical caveats before choosing the assembled route. Fitting a heatsink means handling the drive and sometimes removing a factory label, and manufacturer warranty policies on that differ - check yours before doing it. And the PS5 bay has a height limit, so a tall aftermarket heatsink can fail to fit under the cover even though it fits the drive.

It is worth being explicit about the columns this page does not have, because their absence is a decision rather than an oversight.
There is no performance column beyond the requirement. We do not benchmark drives, we have no test rig, and publishing a speed ranking assembled from manufacturer claims would present marketing as measurement. Sony's floor is a published requirement and membership of this table is the compliance test; beyond that, a number from a specification sheet tells you what the maker asserts rather than what the console will do with it.
There is no endurance column either. TBW ratings are meaningful and they are also inconsistently published across the budget end of this market, where the drives that most need scrutiny are the ones least likely to state a figure. A column that is populated for the established brands and blank for everything else would imply the blanks are worse rather than merely undocumented.
What is left is what we can stand behind: does it meet Sony's requirement, what does it cost including the heatsink it needs, what is that per gigabyte, and do we recognise the manufacturer. Those four are enough to make the decision, and each of them is checkable.
PCIe Gen5 drives are on sale and they are not a better PS5 purchase. The console's M.2 slot is Gen4, and Sony's requirement is a Gen4 drive - a Gen5 drive installed in a PS5 operates at the interface the console provides.
So the extra money buys a specification the platform cannot use. That is not an argument against Gen5 drives generally; in a current desktop they make sense. It is an argument against paying the Gen5 premium for a console upgrade.
