Verdicts are computed from our own daily snapshots, always against the same drive's own record and never against a manufacturer list price. The only price shown on this page is the current one, with the time we last checked it — we publish the verdict as a label rather than printing past prices. Out-of-stock drives are excluded entirely, and the date beside each badge tells you how long we have been watching that drive.
Each drive is compared against its own recent price history on its own condition track. A refurbished listing is scored against what that refurbished listing has cost, never against the new drive's range, because the two move independently and blending them manufactures a permanent false bargain on the refurbished side.
Toshiba verdicts carry an extra caveat the other brand pages do not need. Because MG and N300 listings go in and out of stock more than their Seagate and WD equivalents, a drive's price history has gaps in it, and a drive that has been unavailable for weeks may return at a price its own history cannot usefully judge. Where that is the case we would rather show no verdict than a confident one built on three observations.
Cost per terabyte remains the number to act on. A verdict tells you whether a drive is cheap relative to itself; the per-terabyte column tells you whether it is cheap relative to every other way of buying that capacity, including from the other two makers.

A verdict needs price history, and Toshiba listings are in stock less consistently than the Seagate and WD equivalents, so their histories have gaps. Where a drive has not been observed across enough refreshes we show the live price and leave the verdict blank rather than scoring against a handful of observations.
Toshiba rewards buying when you see it. The availability data on the hub is the reason: a Toshiba listing at a good price is more likely to disappear than to get cheaper, because the constraint on the line is supply rather than demand. That is the opposite of the advice we would give on a deeply stocked line like Ultrastar, where waiting costs you very little.
