Surveillance Drive Workload Ratings Explained
A workload rating is the one specification that actually decides which surveillance drive tier you need - not brand, not capacity alone. This page lays out the ladder as the manufacturers state it, what happens if you exceed it, and the arithmetic that tells you which tier your own camera count requires.

These are reproduced side by side as published, with no cross-vendor judgement about which maker's tiering is "better" - Seagate and WD structure their lines differently (Seagate keeps a flat 550TB/year across its entire AI line; WD's own 360TB/year tier was, per the document that states it, tied to specific part numbers WD has since revised at 8TB).
What exceeding the rating means
Seagate states a consequence explicitly, quoted verbatim from its SkyHawk AI Serial ATA Product Manual:
โWorkloads exceeding the annualized rate may degrade the drive MTBF and impact product reliability.โ

WD's own datasheets (WD Purple, November 2025; WD Purple Pro, July 2025) define how the workload rate is calculated but do not state a consequence for exceeding it, in any document we could render. We report that absence rather than assume a consequence WD has not published.
Neither maker frames the workload rating as a hard cutoff the drive enforces - nothing stops a drive from accepting writes above its rating, and no vendor documentation we read describes the drive refusing work or shutting down. The stated risk is to reliability over time (MTBF, per Seagate's own wording) rather than an immediate failure. That distinction matters for how you read the rating: it is a design target for what the drive is validated against, not a governor built into the firmware.
Why the ladder isn't as simple as four numbers
Reading these figures off a single datasheet gives a cleaner picture than the market actually delivers. Both makers have revised the exact part numbers behind a given capacity over time, and the rating that applied to an 8TB WD Purple in 2019 does not automatically apply to the 8TB WD Purple sold today - it depends on which exact part number you are buying, which is why every figure on this page is tied to a named document and, where relevant, a named part number rather than a bare capacity.
This is also why we do not blend Seagate's and WD's ladders into one number. Seagate holds 550TB/year flat across its entire SkyHawk AI line from 8TB to 32TB - a genuinely different tiering philosophy from WD, whose 360TB/year figure was tied to specific 2019-era part numbers at 8/10/12TB and has since been superseded at 8TB by a 180TB/year retail configuration. Two manufacturers can rate the same nominal capacity differently, at different points in time, using different structures entirely - which is the whole reason this page cites every figure to its own document rather than asserting a single authoritative ladder.
How a rating relates to your install: the arithmetic
Continuous annual write volume is camera count ร per-camera bitrate ร hours recorded per day, annualised - the exact formula both Seagate and WD publish for their own workload-rate definition. We use WD's own published single-stream reference bitrate (3.2Mbps, Single stream, 1080p, H.265, 25fps) as the input, cited below, rather than inventing one.

These are vendor maxima, tested under the makers' own stated conditions - Seagate's own footnote for its capture/compare event figures cites an embedded AI NVR doing 64-channel recording with 16-channel playback. They are far above what a typical home or small-business install runs, which is the honest point: reaching 64 cameras or 32 concurrent AI streams on a single drive is a large-deployment scenario, not a default assumption.

Buying by tier, not by brand
Once you know which tier your install actually needs, the brand decision is a live price comparison rather than a specification one: Seagate SkyHawk and WD Purple both sit at the standard 180TB/year tier with materially similar published specifications, and Seagate SkyHawk AI and WD Purple Pro both sit at 550TB/year. The one case where tier and brand decisions cannot be separated is WD's own higher-rated Purple parts: if you specifically want WD's 360TB/year rating rather than paying for the full AI tier at 550TB/year, that option exists only on specific, older WD part numbers (WD82PURZ, WD101PURZ, WD121PURZ) rather than on the current retail lineup - worth checking the exact part number a listing actually ships before assuming that middle tier is available to you.

What happens if I exceed the workload rating?

Does 8 cameras need a 550TB/year drive?
No, and the arithmetic says so plainly. 8 cameras at WD's own single-stream reference bitrate (3.2Mbps, Single stream, 1080p, H.265, 25fps) running 24 hours a day works out to roughly 100.9TB a year - under even the 120TB/year desktop-class rating, and only about half the 180TB/year standard-surveillance tier's ceiling. The 550TB/year AI tier exists for camera counts and use cases far beyond this, though a 12-16 camera system at the same bitrate is worth checking rather than assuming it also has room to spare.
Does WD publish a higher workload rating at higher capacities?
Yes, but by exact part number rather than by capacity alone. WD's April 2019 Purple data sheet states 360TB/year for WD82PURZ, WD101PURZ and WD121PURZ (8/10/12TB) against 180TB/year for smaller capacities - but WD's current (November 2025) 8TB retail part number, WD84PURZ, is the 180TB/year configuration, not the 360TB/year one. Check the exact part number, not just the capacity, before assuming which rating applies.

Is the AI tier ever worth it for a small install?
Only if you need the capacity it reaches or your recorder runs analytics on stored footage while writing - not for camera count alone. Seagate and WD both rate 64 cameras on their standard tiers too; the AI tier's real differentiators are the 550TB/year headroom, the extra warranty years, and the 32 AI-stream rating for on-drive analytics workloads, none of which a small camera count by itself requires.
