WD's Purple Pro documentation states a workload rating of up to 550TB/year against standard Purple's 180TB/year on WD's current parts - roughly three times the rated endurance. The warranty term steps from 3 years to 5, and Purple Pro's AllFrame AI firmware adds a stated 32 AI-stream rating for on-drive analytics that standard Purple's current documentation does not claim at all.
Both lines state support for up to 64 HD cameras, which is not what separates them. The separation is total annual write volume the drive is rated to absorb, whether the recorder reads footage back for analytics while writing, and RPM: Purple Pro's confirmed 7200RPM across every capacity is stated plainly in WD's July 2025 data sheet, where the current standard-Purple sheet does not print an RPM column at all for its 1-8TB parts.
What neither data sheet supports is a performance comparison, and we do not publish one. The tiers differ in rated endurance, warranty, RPM and stream rating - all documented - and that is the whole of the honest case.
Take your per-camera bitrate - WD's own footnote reference is 3.2Mbps for a single 1080p H.265 stream at 25fps - multiply by camera count, and compare the annual total against 180TB (standard) or 550TB (Pro).
Eight cameras at WD's own reference bitrate, running 24 hours a day, works out to roughly 28TB a year - comfortably inside the standard tier's rating with enormous margin. Reaching even the standard tier's 180TB ceiling at that bitrate takes roughly 51 cameras running continuously. The honest reading of WD's own numbers is that most home and small-business buyers do not need Purple Pro on camera count and bitrate alone.
Where the arithmetic changes is analytics load, not camera count: a recorder running detection on stored footage while continuing to write is doing two jobs at once, which is the pattern Purple Pro's AI-stream rating exists for.

Check your recorder's maximum supported drive capacity before assuming the largest drive is even usable - that ceiling lives in the recorder's own documentation and is frequently lower than the largest drive for sale.
