Small-capacity 10K RPM SAS drives are the cheapest way into low-latency enterprise storage. OEM pulls from Dell and HP often come with caddy trays included.
Dell, HP, and IBM OEM-branded drives are the same Seagate or HGST mechanisms with custom firmware. They work in any SAS controller and are significantly cheaper.
512n drives are universally compatible. 512e drives emulate 512-byte sectors on 4K physical sectors. Both work, but 512n avoids alignment edge cases on older controllers.
10K 2.5" drives suit small-database IOPS workloads. 7.2K 3.5" nearline drives at this capacity are ultra-cheap bulk storage for dev/test or cold data.
Yes. 4TB SAS drives are excellent for RAID 6 arrays. A 12-drive RAID 6 array gives you 40TB usable, which is a solid enterprise configuration. Both 7.2K nearline and refurb pulls work well.
