How to Use This TCO Calculator

STEP 01
Enter your capacity target
Input the total usable storage you need in terabytes. The calculator accounts for RAID overhead automatically.
STEP 02
Choose storage type
Select HDD (SATA or SAS), NVMe SSD, or LTO tape. Each uses realistic 2026 pricing from our live database.
STEP 03
Set your environment
Enter power cost per kWh and PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness). Default values reflect US average data center costs.
STEP 04
Compare 5-year costs
The calculator outputs total hardware cost, 5-year power cost, and cost per TB per year for each configuration.

What Goes Into Storage TCO

Purchase price is only one component of storage total cost of ownership. According to industry studies, post-deployment costs account for up to 80% of the total IT cost over a storage system's lifecycle. This calculator includes all four major cost categories:

🖥️

Hardware Acquisition

Drive cost, enclosure or server chassis, storage controller (HBA or RAID card), cables, and installation. This is the most visible cost but typically represents less than 50% of 5-year TCO for HDD systems.

35-50% of 5yr TCO

Power & Cooling

Enterprise HDDs draw 6-12W each. NVMe SSDs draw 8-25W. Cooling overhead (PUE) multiplies power cost by 1.3-1.8x. At $0.10/kWh, a 60-drive HDD array costs approximately $630/year in power alone.

Maintenance & Replacement

Enterprise drives fail at 0.5-2.0% annually. For a 60-drive array, expect 1-5 drive failures per year at average rates. Replacement cost includes the drive plus labor for physical swap and RAID rebuild time.

Management Labor

Storage systems require administration time for provisioning, monitoring, firmware updates, capacity planning, and troubleshooting. At $75/hour blended IT labor, 2 hours/week represents $7,800/year in management cost.

Worked Examples

Three common enterprise storage scenarios with full 5-year TCO breakdowns using current market pricing.

Example 1: 100TB Homelab NAS

6 × 20TB SATA HDD in RAID 6 on TrueNAS. Home deployment.

INPUTS
Usable capacity80TB
Drive typeSATA HDD (refurb)
Drive cost~$600 (6 × $100)
PlatformTrueNAS on used server ($400)
Power draw48W (6 drives × 8W)
kWh rate$0.12 (home electricity)
PUE1.0 (home deployment)
5-YEAR TCO RESULTS
Hardware cost$1,000
Annual power$50
Power over 5yr$250
5-year total TCO$1,250
$/TB/year$3.13
Verdict: Best value for non-critical homelab storage. Refurb drives with RAID 6 and regular SMART monitoring provide acceptable reliability at minimum cost.

Example 2: 500TB Business NAS

30 × 20TB IronWolf Pro in RAID 6 groups on Synology expansion. SMB production.

INPUTS
Usable capacity420TB
Drive typeNew SATA HDD (IronWolf Pro)
Drive cost~$9,000 (30 × $300)
PlatformSynology NAS + expansion ($3,000)
Power draw240W (30 drives × 8W)
kWh rate$0.10 (commercial)
PUE1.3 (small server room)
5-YEAR TCO RESULTS
Hardware cost$12,000
Annual power$272
Power over 5yr$1,360
Drive replacements 5yr$900 (3% failure rate)
5-year total TCO$14,260
$/TB/year$6.79
Verdict: Solid TCO for production business NAS. IronWolf Pro's 5-year warranty and included Rescue service reduce replacement cost risk. Scales efficiently.

Example 3: 1PB Tiered Datacenter

200TB NVMe hot tier + 800TB SATA HDD capacity tier. Enterprise deployment.

INPUTS
Total usable1,000TB
NVMe tier200TB — 27 × 7.68TB drives (~$40,000)
HDD tier800TB — 50 × 20TB SATA (~$10,000)
Servers/enclosures$25,000
Combined power800W estimated
kWh rate$0.10 (datacenter)
PUE1.5 (enterprise DC)
5-YEAR TCO RESULTS
Hardware cost$75,000
Annual power$1,051
Power over 5yr$5,256
Management labor 5yr$39,000 (2hrs/week)
5-year total TCO$119,256
$/TB/year$23.85
Verdict: Tiered architecture delivers NVMe performance for hot data at 73% lower TCO than all-flash. The HDD capacity tier at $6-9/TB/year anchors overall cost efficiency.
