Which tool answers which question

These exist because three specific decisions come up constantly and none of them is answerable from a price table alone. What a drive costs is the easy part; what it costs you over five years, how much usable space survives parity, and whether a module fits the board you own are the parts that actually decide a purchase, and each needs arithmetic rather than a listing.

The RAID planner is the one most people need first. Buying storage means buying a configuration, and the gap between raw and usable capacity is larger than newcomers expect: eight bays of 12TB drives is 96TB of hardware and 72TB of RAID 6 space before the filesystem takes its share. It also surfaces the constraint nobody plans for, which is that filling every bay on day one turns the next upgrade into a full replacement rather than an addition.

The TCO calculator answers a different question, and it is the one that changes minds about recertified drives. Purchase price is a single number; power draw over five years is a recurring one, and at electricity rates in much of the world the running cost of a spinning array is a meaningful fraction of what the drives cost. A cheaper drive that draws more can lose over the life of the machine, and that only becomes visible when both sides are on the same sheet.

The memory finder exists because server RAM compatibility is unforgiving in a way storage is not. A drive that does not fit is obvious immediately. A module that is the wrong rank, the wrong voltage or unbuffered where the board wants registered will often post and then behave badly, which is a far worse failure mode than not working at all.

What these do not do

None of them predicts prices, and none of them tells you a drive will fail. Both are forecasts dressed as calculations, and the inputs that would make them honest do not exist publicly. What these tools do is arithmetic on numbers you supply and prices we can verify, which is a narrower promise and one we can keep.
