Before spending anything, know what you are working with. A PS5's advertised capacity is not what you get: the system reserves a substantial portion for the operating system and its own functions, and the usable figure is meaningfully lower than the number on the box. Sony documents the console's storage behaviour on its own support pages, and the gap surprises people every time.

What eats the space is almost entirely games. Captures are the quiet second consumer. Video clips accumulate without anyone deciding they should, and a console that has been recording gameplay for a year can be holding a genuinely surprising amount. That is the first thing to check, because it is the least painful thing to delete.

Deleting games is free and it is not costless. A deleted game has to be downloaded again, which takes time and a lot of data, and on a metered or slow connection that is a real price rather than a theoretical one. The honest framing is that deletion buys you space with your own time. If you are deleting and reinstalling the same two games in rotation, you have already outgrown the console's storage and the only question left is which upgrade path to take.

Path 1 - USB storage, and the rule that trips everyone

An external USB drive is the cheapest storage a PS5 can use, and it comes with a platform restriction that is the single most misunderstood thing about console storage.

PS4 games can be played directly from USB extended storage. PS5 games cannot. A PS5 game can be moved to a USB drive to get it off the internal storage, and it can be moved back when you want to play it, but it will not run from there. Sony states this in its own support documentation, and no drive, cable or adapter changes it - it is a platform decision rather than a speed limitation.

That makes USB an archive rather than a play surface for PS5 titles. Which is still genuinely useful: moving a finished game to USB and back beats deleting it and re-downloading, because a local transfer is faster than pulling the whole thing over the internet again. If your library is mostly PS4 titles, the picture changes entirely and USB becomes a proper play surface.

Sony also specifies the connection: a SuperSpeed USB drive at 5Gbps or above, connected directly rather than through a hub. A drive plugged into a hub will not be accepted, and that is worth knowing before buying a hub to solve a port shortage.

Path 2 - the M.2 upgrade, which is the actual fix

An internal M.2 drive is the only path that adds space PS5 games can actually run from. Once installed, it behaves like the console's own storage: games install to it, run from it, and you stop thinking about the problem.

Sony publishes the requirements and they are specific rather than advisory. The drive must be PCIe Gen4 M.2 NVMe, it must meet a stated sequential read floor of 5,500 MB/s, it must carry a heat-dissipation structure, and it must fit within published dimensional limits including the height of any heatsink. A drive that meets it satisfies the console, and paying more for a headline figure far above it buys you nothing the PS5 will use.
