The interesting consequence of the shortage era is that Exos frequently undercuts IronWolf Pro per terabyte despite being the enterprise product, because the two lines move through different channels with different pricing dynamics. That inverts the assumption that enterprise means dearer.

The differences that are real

Noise is the one people underestimate and the one most likely to matter. Enterprise drives are designed for racks in rooms nobody sits in, and their seek noise and idle acoustics reflect that. A NAS in a living room or a home office with Exos drives is audible in a way that IronWolf Pro drives generally are not.

Firmware behaviour differs in error recovery timing. If the NAS lives in a room where you work or relax, IronWolf Pro is worth the premium for the noise difference alone, and that is a quality-of-life argument rather than a technical one. Nobody regrets a quieter machine.

When each of these is the wrong choice

The case against Exos is entirely about where it lives: put one in a NAS on a desk and you will hear it every time it seeks, which is a daily irritation that no price advantage compensates for. The case against IronWolf Pro is that you may be paying a premium over a drive with identical documented specifications for a firmware distinction and an acoustic difference that do not apply to your installation.
