The 3.5-inch FireCuda is a solid-state hybrid drive: a conventional hard drive with a small amount of NAND on board that the firmware uses to cache frequently-accessed data. The mechanical part does the storing; the flash part tries to make the things you touch often feel faster.
Both 3.5-inch FireCuda models we track, the ST1000DX002 and ST2000DX002, are conventionally recorded. That is worth stating because the BarraCuda line they sit alongside is largely shingled at the same capacities.
The 2.5-inch FireCuda line is different and is shingled per Seagate's own list, which is another instance of the same family name covering opposite answers depending on form factor.
The honest assessment is that hybrid drives made most sense in an era when SSDs were expensive enough that a small one was not an obvious purchase. That era ended, and then the 2026 NAND shortage complicated it again.
A separate small SSD plus a large hard drive is a better arrangement than a hybrid whenever it is affordable, because you control what lives on flash rather than leaving it to a caching heuristic, and the flash portion is far larger. That remains true today.
Where a hybrid still makes sense is a machine with exactly one drive bay and no M.2 slot, where you cannot have both. In that specific configuration the cache genuinely helps with boot and frequently-used applications, and the alternative is a plain mechanical drive.
It is also worth knowing that the 3.5-inch FireCuda line has been de-emphasised and is effectively legacy. Buying into it now is buying into a product family that is not being extended.
There is one genuine argument for a 3.5-inch FireCuda that has nothing to do with the flash cache: it is conventionally recorded at 1TB and 2TB, where the current BarraCuda models at those capacities are shingled.
If you want a conventionally-recorded Seagate desktop drive at 1TB or 2TB, FireCuda is one of the few current routes to it, and the flash cache comes along as a bonus rather than as the reason.
That said, the WD10EZEX and WD20EZBX from Western Digital are conventionally recorded at those capacities too, per WD's own list, and are plain hard drives at plain hard drive prices. If conventional recording is the goal rather than hybrid caching, those are the more direct answer.
The case against FireCuda is that you are paying a premium for a caching heuristic that a separate small SSD would beat outright, in a product line that is effectively legacy. The case against a plain BarraCuda at 1TB and 2TB is that the current models at those capacities are shingled, so the cheaper drive is also the one that cannot later go into an array. Neither is a NAS drive, and if that is where the storage is heading, both are the wrong purchase.

We do not publish performance comparisons. What the specification documents is that FireCuda carries a NAND cache and BarraCuda does not, which is a design difference rather than a measured one. Whether it helps depends entirely on whether your working set fits the cache.
