So MDD is a hard-drive label belonging to GoHardDrive, a California corporation. It is not one of the three companies that manufacture hard drive mechanisms — Seagate, Western Digital and Toshiba — and it does not claim to be. The mechanism inside an MDD-labelled drive was built by one of those three, and the listing does not reliably say which.
TechRadar has covered the label under the headline “Controversial hard drive vendor breaks new record with cheapest HDD yet”, describing MDD as a white-label brand owned by GoHardDrive that sources both refurbished stock and drives that are new but end-of-life. Everything in this section is computed from our price database when you load the page. It is the part of this subject nobody arguing on a forum has: not one person's experience of one drive, but the whole visible shelf, counted.
The condition split is the number to read first. Of the 17 MDD listings in stock, 14 are sold as used and 3 as new — so this is predominantly a used-drive catalogue with a new tier alongside it, and the two are not interchangeable. The in-stock listings span SAS-12G, SAS-6G and SATA-6G, which matters because a SAS drive needs a host bus adapter and will not run on a normal SATA port — see our HBA guide before buying one. Is MDD actually cheaper? Two measurements, and they disagree
The reputation is that these drives are the cheap option. That can be measured, and it has to be measured two different ways, because the two answer different questions and give different answers.
The shelf comparison, which is the weaker one
The cheapest in-stock MDD hard drive is $18.33/TB. The cheapest in-stock hard drive from anyone else is $14.99/TB. On that comparison MDD is more expensive by 22.3%. Treat that figure with suspicion, and we are telling you so on our own page. Those two listings are almost certainly different capacities, on different interfaces, in different condition. Subtracting them measures the product mix as much as it measures the seller.
The matched comparison, which is the one to use
The honest method holds capacity, interface and condition constant and compares only like with like: the cheapest MDD 18TB used SATA drive against the cheapest 18TB used SATA drive from anyone else, and so on for every cell where both sides have stock. There are 11 such cells right now. MDD is cheaper in 6 of them and dearer in 5. Across all of them the mean is +3.2% and the median is -2.9%. Throughout this page a positive figure means MDD costs MORE per terabyte than the comparable listing, and a negative one means it costs less.

Negative means MDD costs less per terabyte than the cheapest comparable listing from another brand; positive means it costs more. Cells are only shown where both sides have a drive in stock at that exact capacity, interface and condition.
The pattern in that table is more useful than either average, and it is not the one the reputation predicts: the advantage is concentrated at the larger capacities and reverses at the small ones. Notice that the mean and the median disagree about the sign. That is not a rounding artefact - the mean is dragged upwards by two small-capacity cells where a handful of listings sit at unusual prices, while the median describes the typical cell. Quoting either one alone would be misleading, which is why both are here with the cell count beside them, and why we give you the whole table rather than a headline number.
The warranty: whose promise is it?
This is the part most worth understanding before you buy, and it is not specific to MDD — it applies to every seller-warranted drive on the market.
A seller warranty and a manufacturer warranty are different instruments. A manufacturer warranty attaches to the drive's serial number. Seagate, Western Digital or Toshiba will look that serial up and tell you what coverage it carries, and that answer does not depend on who sold you the drive or whether they are still trading. A seller warranty is a commitment by the company that sold it — here, the company behind the MDD label — and it is worth exactly what that company's continued willingness and ability to honour it is worth.
Neither is inherently better. A five-year seller warranty is a longer term than most refurbished stock carries anywhere, and the forum reports include people who used it successfully. But it is a different kind of promise from the one printed on a new retail drive, and a buyer who thinks they are getting manufacturer coverage on an enterprise mechanism has misunderstood what is on offer. You can find out what the manufacturer says about your specific unit. The serial number on the drive label resolves against the maker's own checker, and those checkers are linked from our warranty guide. If a drive carries residual manufacturer coverage, that is a fact about your unit that no listing can tell you and no reseller controls.
Grading language is a claim, not a measurement
Listings in this market carry phrases like “0 power-on hours”, “Grade A” and “certified refurbished”. These describe the unit the seller believes they shipped. We render them as seller claims wherever they appear on this site, and we do not repeat them in our own voice, because we have no way to verify a grading claim from outside — and neither do you, until the drive is in your hand.
The check is the same whoever sold it: read the SMART attributes yourself before you trust the drive with anything, and compare what they say against what the listing said. Power-on hours are recorded by the drive's own firmware. If a listing claimed zero and the drive reports thirty thousand, you have learned something conclusive within your return window rather than a year later.
A seller's grading language describes the unit they shipped. Your own SMART read describes the unit you received, and it is the only one of the two you can check.
The question everyone asks, and where it gets asked
The reason this page exists is that the question has been live on the enthusiast forums for years without a resolution. We link the threads because their existence and their lack of consensus are themselves informative, and we summarise each in a single neutral sentence rather than quoting them. These are individual reports about small numbers of units, they are not verifiable by us, and selecting the favourable ones would be a way of lying with true quotations.
A buyer asks whether MDD-labelled drives are a reasonable purchase and gets replies spanning both positive long-run reports and warnings to treat them as used enterprise stock.
A prospective NAS builder asks about the white-labelled refurbished drives, and a respondent reports satisfactory delivery and packaging alongside bad sectors on some of the units received.
A user asks about reliability for array use and the replies range from several months of trouble-free running to multiple failures inside seven months, with differing accounts of warranty service.
A thread specifically about the white-label relationship, collecting individual purchase reports over an extended period without converging on a shared conclusion.
Read across them and the honest summary is that reported experience varies and does not converge. That is what you would expect from used enterprise hardware sold at volume: some units run for years, some fail early, and the people who had a bad experience are more motivated to write about it than the people whose drives simply worked. Anecdote cannot settle this, which is why the measurable parts of the question are measured above and the unmeasurable part is left as what it is.
So what are you actually buying?
Putting the sourced parts together, without adding a verdict we have no standing to give: you are buying an enterprise-class hard drive mechanism built by one of the three manufacturers and sold under the label of a California corporation that holds the trademark, mostly in used condition, warranted by that corporation rather than by the drive maker, at a price that is competitive at large capacities and not at small ones. Whether that trade is right for you depends on what the drive is for — a redundant array where a failed member is an inconvenience is a very different proposition from a single drive holding the only copy of something.

Some listings describe drives that are new but end-of-life - stock built some time ago and never sold - and others are refurbished or used enterprise pulls. The two are priced differently and carry different risk, so the condition column on the table below is the first thing to read.
Are MDD drives cheaper than buying from a major brand?
Sometimes, and it depends heavily on capacity. Comparing the cheapest MDD listing against the cheapest listing on the whole site is not a meaningful comparison, because those are different products. How do I check a drive when it arrives?
Read its SMART attributes before you put data on it, and do that inside the return window rather than waiting until you need the warranty. Power-on hours, reallocated sectors (attribute 05) and pending sectors (C5) tell you what the drive has already done.
