The cause is structural and well documented: AI datacenters are estimated to consume roughly 70% of high-end DRAM output in 2026, per an Avnet market brief citing WSJ, IDC and TrendForce research, and the same brief carries TrendForce's Q1 2026 contract forecasts of DRAM prices up 55-60% quarter over quarter. HBM4 supply is reported fully committed into 2026. Conventional server memory — the DDR4 and DDR5 registered ECC modules that every non-hyperscale fleet actually buys — is what remains after that allocation, and it is priced accordingly.

How the Squeeze Works

The mechanism behind 2026 memory pricing is a deliberate reallocation, not a supply accident. As our memory-shortage analysis documented, Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron — who control over 95% of global DRAM output — shifted wafer capacity toward High Bandwidth Memory for AI accelerators, which consumed roughly 23% of global DRAM wafers in 2026, up from 8% in 2024. DDR4: The Value Refuge, Quantified

The honest caveat stays attached: DDR4 is a sunset standard whose supply will tighten as fabs retire the lines, and whose demand fades as fleets age out. The refuge is real but not permanent — which argues for buying a platform's remaining-life memory requirement now rather than rationing it across future purchases at unknown prices.

DDR5: Paying the Toll

DDR5 buyers hold no cards the supply side respects. Sapphire Rapids, Emerald Rapids, EPYC Genoa and Turin platforms run DDR5 exclusively; the modules carry the shortage's full premium; and there is no meaningful used market because the fleets that would feed one are still in service. For fleets, the discipline is concentration: buy complete channel populations in single orders (split orders pay multiple prices for one configuration), verify against the platform QVL, and treat listing-level dips as the only real discount mechanism the 2026 market offers.
