32GB DDR4: what you are buying

A 32GB DDR4 laptop listing is most often a pair of 16GB SO-DIMMs and less often a single 32GB module. Both are priced here per gigabyte of the total, and the module count is shown beside each one.

At this size the difference between the layouts matters more than it does at 16GB. A pair fills both sockets of a two-socket laptop, so whatever was fitted before comes out. A single 32GB module needs only one socket, which is the only route to 32GB on a laptop with one socket, and on a laptop with a soldered module plus one socket it is the module that goes in the socket. The stated rated speeds present at this size are DDR4-2133, DDR4-2400, DDR4-2663, DDR4-2666, DDR4-3200, printed as the listings give them: they are the makers' specifications and we neither rank kits by them nor call any of them worth a premium.

The cheapest is SK hynix 32GB DDR4-2666 at $185, or $5.78 per gigabyte; the median across the size is $7.35 per gigabyte. The gap between them is worth as much as either number: a floor far below the median means the cheap end is one or two kits deep, and a floor close to it means the size is priced tightly together. The plausibility floor for this exact size is $3.31 per gigabyte, computed from 37 established-brand listings; a kit priced under it is priced where a counterfeit would be, and is a reason to check the seller, not a verdict.

If you are weighing 32GB for a laptop that is a few years old, weigh it against the rest of the machine too: memory added to a laptop does not change its processor, storage or battery, and the sizing page is about capacity only, from the software makers' published requirements.

Check your platform first

Check the maximum first. A 32GB kit in a laptop documented to a 16GB maximum is a module the machine is not specified to use. The maker's specification page or service manual for your exact model and variant is the authority on the maximum, the socket count and any soldered memory.

Do not buy 32GB on panic

A 32GB upgrade to an older DDR4 laptop is a large share of what the machine is now worth. If it works for what you do, that is a strong reason to decline today's price rather than chase it. If it does not, buy the capacity it is documented to take.
