New 64GB DDR4 desktop kits start at $6.44 per gigabyte ($412 for the cheapest, Samsung), median $9.90, across 12 in-stock kits, as of 2026-09-22. Buy the capacity you need now, do not buy speculatively, and a working kit you are happy with is not a reason to buy.

Buy the capacity you need now, do not buy speculatively, and a working kit you are happy with is not a reason to buy. Part of this market's demand is fear of higher prices, and buying on fear is how a buyer ends up owning capacity they did not need at the top of a price cycle. If your machine works and the memory in it is enough for what you run, the right amount to buy today is none.
Sixty-four gigabytes of DDR4 for a desktop is normally two 32GB modules, or four 16GB modules for a four-slot board. It is the top of the DDR4 desktop range that most boards support and the largest DDR4 size we track. The module count column in the table shows the layout of each listing, and the price is divided by the total so the layouts compare directly per gigabyte.
It is also a size that exists mainly for an unusual reason: people with platforms that take DDR4 and nothing else, who have work that needs a lot of memory, and who cannot move to DDR5 without replacing the board. That is a narrow group, and it explains why stock at this size is thin and why the floor can be a single listing.
The plausibility floor for this cell is shown below where enough established-brand listings exist, and the page says so where they do not. At the larger sizes the incentive to counterfeit is greatest and the check on a suspiciously cheap listing is the same: who is selling, and does the listing agree with itself.
On 2026-09-22 we hold 12 new, non-ECC DDR4 desktop kits totalling 64GB from 7 brands (Samsung, Crucial, G.Skill, TeamGroup, Corsair, Kingston, ADATA). The module layouts on offer, with counts, are 2 x 32GB (9), 4 x 16GB (3). The stated rated speeds present at this size are DDR4-2400, DDR4-2666, DDR4-2933, DDR4-3200, DDR4-3600, printed as the listings give them: they are the makers' specifications and we neither rank kits by them nor call any of them worth a premium.
The cheapest is Samsung 64GB (2x32GB) DDR4-3200 CL22 at $412, or $6.44 per gigabyte; the median across the size is $9.90 per gigabyte. The gap between them is worth as much as either number: a floor far below the median means the cheap end is one or two kits deep, and a floor close to it means the size is priced tightly together. The plausibility floor for this exact size is $4.45 per gigabyte, computed from 12 established-brand listings; a kit priced under it is priced where a counterfeit would be, and is a reason to check the seller, not a verdict.
In stock only, cheapest per gigabyte first. $/GB divides the price by the TOTAL kit capacity. Speed and latency are the listing's stated specification.

Per gigabyte, at the cheapest kit for each size and on the date above: 32GB at $5.97 per gigabyte (64GB is +7.9% against it). That is a levels comparison of single cheapest kits, so it can change because one kit sells out or appears, with no seller changing a price. It tells you where the cheapest gigabyte is today, which is useful for deciding what to buy today; it does not tell you that prices moved.
The per-gigabyte view is worth having and it is also the reason for caution. A larger kit that costs less per gigabyte is still a larger purchase, and the cheapest gigabyte you do not need is the most expensive one you can buy. The next section is about that.
Sixty-four gigabytes on a DDR4 machine is for a person whose workload needs it and whose platform cannot take DDR5: a large virtual machine host on older hardware, heavy media or scientific work, a homelab that runs many services. It is a computed number, and if you have computed it you do not need our opinion.
It is not for someone who wants headroom. Buying this size to future-proof a DDR4 machine buys capacity for a platform at the end of its life, at a price that is elevated by the reporting we cite. If a later need appears, the moment to meet it is then, and the platform you meet it on may not be this one.
There is also a question worth asking before buying: if your workload really needs this much memory, is a DDR4 desktop the right machine? Registered server memory is priced differently, and the server-versus-consumer page computes the gap on live data. It only helps if you are also buying the platform that takes it, so it counts the whole cost.
Some DDR4 boards top out below 64GB, and some support it only with particular module sizes. Your board's memory support list is the authority, and it will tell you the maximum per slot and the maximum total. Do not infer it from the generation or from the kit.
Sixty-four gigabytes of DDR4 is a large sum for a platform in its last years. Please do not buy it because prices are in the news. Buy it if a specific task needs it now, and otherwise leave it.
As of 2026-09-22, the cheapest new 64GB DDR4 desktop kit we track is Samsung 64GB (2x32GB) DDR4-3200 CL22 at $412, $6.44 per gigabyte, out of 12 in stock. That is a single listing, so it can change because one kit sells out; the median is $9.90 per gigabyte.
Only if a task you run needs it and your platform cannot move to DDR5. It suits large virtual machine hosts and heavy computation on older hardware. It is not the size for headroom.
Only your board's documentation can say. Some boards top out lower or support the total only with particular module sizes. Read the memory support list first.
Sometimes. Registered server memory prices differently, and our server-versus-consumer page computes the gap live and counts the whole platform cost. It only helps if you are also buying the platform.
It is the top of the DDR4 desktop range and a narrow market, so it has few listings and the cheapest kit is more sensitive to one listing appearing or selling out.
If you cannot name the task that needs it, do not buy. We do not predict prices; the forecast page has the dated statements and what would change the outlook.
