This is the entry size for a current DDR4 build and the size a large installed base of older machines shipped with. That history matters for the market: a great many people own boards that take DDR4 and nothing else, and 16GB is the size most likely to be needed for a repair or a modest extension of what they already have.

Because it is a small kit, the absolute prices at this size are lower than at any other on this site, and the temptation to treat a small number as a bargain is strong. The buyer for whom it is wrong is the one who reads about rising prices and buys 16GB to have in a drawer. A spare is the most expensive kind of memory to own.

DDR4 in 2026 is a maintenance decision rather than an upgrade decision, and 16GB is the maintenance size. If you are choosing a platform from scratch, the memory generation is a small part of a larger decision and this is not the page that should drive it.

Check your platform first

DDR4 is keyed differently from DDR5 and will not fit a DDR5 board, so the board decides. Check your manual for the generation and the supported speeds and capacity per slot, and match a new kit to what is already in the machine where possible, since the manual's population guidance assumes what it lists. Do not buy 16GB on panic

Sixteen gigabytes is the size at which people talk themselves into buying an extra kit because it is a small sum. Small sums for unneeded things are still spent. A working machine is not a reason to buy; if it needs the memory to run, buy exactly what it needs.
