32GB DDR4: what you are buying

A 32GB DDR4 desktop kit is normally two 16GB modules, sold as a matched pair, with single 32GB modules and four-by-8GB kits also on the market. The price here is divided by the total kit capacity, so the layouts compare directly per gigabyte, and the module count column in the table shows which you are looking at.

Thirty-two gigabytes is the size at which the DDR4 shortage conversation is loudest, because it is the size most owners of older platforms are reaching for when they finally extend a machine they intend to keep. It is also where the widely repeated claim that DDR4 now costs as much per gigabyte as DDR5 is most often tested, and where the test is meaningful, since a 32GB DDR4 kit and a 32GB DDR5 kit are directly comparable at matched capacity. The cheapest is TeamGroup Elite 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4-2666 CL19 at $191, or $5.97 per gigabyte; the median across the size is $7.81 per gigabyte. The gap between them is worth as much as either number: a floor far below the median means the cheap end is one or two kits deep, and a floor close to it means the size is priced tightly together. How 32GB prices against the neighbouring sizes

That is a levels comparison of single cheapest kits, so it can change because one kit sells out or appears, with no seller changing a price. It tells you where the cheapest gigabyte is today, which is useful for deciding what to buy today; it does not tell you that prices moved.

The per-gigabyte view is worth having and it is also the reason for caution. A larger kit that costs less per gigabyte is still a larger purchase, and the cheapest gigabyte you do not need is the most expensive one you can buy. The next section is about that.

Who needs 32GB, and who does not

Thirty-two gigabytes of DDR4 suits an owner of a DDR4 platform who runs heavier work than a basic desktop: several virtual machines, large files, a lot of applications open together, or a workload with a working set that has outgrown 16GB. If you can point to the task, the size is justified. If you cannot, it probably is not.

The comparison to keep in mind is with what you already have. Extending a machine from 16GB to 32GB because it runs out of memory in real use is a repair. Extending it because a headline says memory is getting dearer is a purchase driven by fear, and the fear is exactly what pushes up the price you pay.

For a platform you are about to retire, do not buy. For a platform you will keep, buy what the machine needs and stop. And if you are weighing a new build, remember that the board sets the generation and the price gap between DDR4 and DDR5 is a small part of the platform's cost.

Match the kit to your board's documentation: generation, supported speeds, capacity per slot and the maker's population guidance.
