Static rails are fixed mounting brackets with no moving parts - the equipment bolts or clips in and stays put. They are the cheapest rail option and the right choice for anything that never needs to slide out of the rack for service.
Sliding rails let equipment extend forward out of the rack, typically while still powered and cabled, for service access without fully removing the unit. They cost more than static rails and are the standard equipment for servers that get serviced in place regularly.
Tool-less mounting is a method rather than a separate rail category - HPE's own Easy Install rail kits, covered on our HPE Gen10 rail page, clip into a square-hole rack without screws. This only works with a rack whose holes match what the tool-less mechanism was designed for; it does not make a kit hole-type-agnostic.
Racks use one of three mounting-hole standards: square holes (the most common in enterprise server racks, and the type Dell's and HPE's own rail kits are generally built for), round holes (an older and less common standard using a different clip or captive-nut style), and threaded holes (the hole itself is tapped for a screw, skipping cage nuts entirely).
A cage nut is a spring-loaded metal clip that snaps into a square rack hole and provides threads for a screw - the standard hardware for mounting equipment or rails into a square-hole rack that doesn't use a tool-less clip system. It is specific to square-hole racks; round-hole and threaded racks use different hardware entirely.
Getting the hole type wrong is the most common expensive mistake in this category - a rail kit built for square holes with cage nuts does not mount in a round-hole or threaded rack, and vice versa. Check your rack's own stated hole type (our rack tables show this as unverified where a listing doesn't state it) against what the rail kit's own listing requires before buying.
Rail kits are built for a specific depth range, not every rack - Dell's ReadyRails family, covered on our Dell rail-generation pages, states a rack depth range of roughly 610 to 900mm on the kits we track; check the specific generation page for the exact figure per kit, since it varies by kit within the family. A rail kit outside your rack's actual depth (see the rack hub's depth-trap section) simply will not reach both ends.

For equipment that isn't rack-mountable at all, a shelf gives it a flat surface inside the rack. Blanking panels fill empty rack units - vendors describe this as airflow management, keeping hot exhaust from recirculating to equipment intakes below, not decoration. Cable management panels route and dress cabling behind the equipment.

Only if your rack has square holes and the rail or equipment you're mounting requires them rather than a tool-less clip - threaded racks skip cage nuts because the hole itself is tapped, and round-hole racks use a different hardware style entirely. Check your specific rack's hole type before buying cage nuts.
A rack shelf - see the live listings above - gives non-rackable equipment (most consumer NAS units, some switches, anything without rack ears) a flat surface inside the rack. Vented shelves exist specifically for gear that needs airflow from below as well as around it.
Manufacturers describe them as an airflow-management part, not decoration - an empty rack unit with no panel lets hot exhaust air recirculate to the front intake of the equipment below it, per how vendors document rack airflow generally. Whether that matters enough to buy panels for every empty U is a judgement call, not one we're making for you.
