Every figure in this section is read from our own catalogue at the moment you loaded the page, and it is a LEVELS observation rather than a rate. The floor is the single cheapest in-stock listing per terabyte; it can move because one cheap listing appeared or vanished, without the market having done anything. That is why percentage changes on this site come from a matched-model index that compares each listing against its own prior price, and never from comparing one day's floor to another's.
As of 2026-08-14, the floor sits at $25.45/TB and the median across 35 in-stock listings at $305.63/TB. The gap between those two is worth as much as either number on its own: a floor far below the median means the cheap end is one or two listings deep, and a floor close to it means the whole catalogue is priced tightly together.
The two condition tracks price separately and we never merge them. New stock starts at $25.45/TB and the refurbished track at $160.00/TB. A refurbished floor well below the new one is the ordinary state of this market rather than a bargain signal, and scoring one against the other would manufacture a discount that does not exist.
The picks table further down carries the same data at row level, in stock only, so a reader who decides to act can do so without leaving the page. It never shows an out-of-stock row, which is why you will not find an empty price cell anywhere in this cluster.
Our snapshots for this category begin on 2026-03-23 and run to 2026-08-14, which is 145 days of daily observations. That window is stated because a trend without its window is not checkable, and because 145 days is a real but modest history - long enough to show a level, short enough that a single unusual month shapes it.
Over the most recent 30 days of that series - 2026-07-15 to 2026-08-14 - the daily floor moved from $21.16/TB to $25.45/TB, a change of +20.3%. Read that as what the cheapest listing did, not as what the market did.
The chart is a levels series by design. A levels chart answers 'what does the cheap end cost' and it answers it honestly; it does not answer 'has the market moved', because a single listing entering or leaving changes it. Both questions are legitimate and they need different instruments, so we do not use one chart to imply the other.
The honest answer is that nobody selling you a date has one, and the reason is that the flash side of the market is being repriced by contract negotiations rather than by retail conditions. SanDisk has been reported raising prices by around 50%, which is not a promotional adjustment - it is a supplier resetting what its output costs.
The capacity behind those contracts is largely spoken for. QLC NAND - the density tier that made cheap high-capacity SSDs possible - has been reported booked through 2026, meaning the buyers who needed it have already committed to it and the spot availability that sets retail pricing is what remains after that.
Our own divergence work covers the consequence: flash and spinning storage have stopped moving together. They are made in different fabs by different companies under different constraints, and treating an SSD price and a hard drive price as two points on one curve stopped being useful when those constraints diverged.
The short version is that consumer SSD pricing is downstream of allocation decisions taken in enterprise and AI-infrastructure contracts, and those decisions were taken before the retail buyer entered the market.
Directionally, as of the date above: the flash market's upward pressure is contract-driven and those contracts run through 2026. A reported 50% supplier increase and capacity booked a year out do not unwind because retail demand cools.
Two documented sources point different ways about when that ends, and we are going to state the disagreement rather than average it into a number neither of them supports. Jefferies Equity Research, in coverage dated 29 June 2026, models storage price rises of 40-50% in Q3 2026 and 30-40% in Q4 2026, and expects no meaningful relief until 2028 - explicitly because new NAND fab capacity was not expected until late 2027. Against that, YMTC fast-tracked its Wuhan Phase III NAND fab into mass production in the second half of 2026, roughly a year ahead of that assumed timeline, as DigiTimes reported on 2 February 2026.
There is also a measurable deceleration already in the contract data. TrendForce forecasts NAND contract prices rising 10-15% quarter-on-quarter in Q3 2026, against 70-75% in Q2. That is still an increase, and it is a substantially smaller one. Whether it is the start of the turn Jefferies places in 2028, or a pause inside a longer climb, is exactly what the next few editions will test.
But the honest read on the retail floor specifically is less clear than on the hard drive side, and we will say so rather than round it into a story. Consumer SSD pricing carries more promotional noise than nearline drives do, individual models discount hard, and the floor on this page moves accordingly. Direction of pressure: upward. Direction of the retail floor over the next quarter: unclear.
Printing unclear is the point. A forecast that resolves every question into a confident direction is not a forecast, it is a sales pitch with a chart attached.
This question and the one above look identical and are not, because they are asked about different things. "When will prices drop" is a question about the contract market, where NAND is allocated months ahead and the answer is set by fab capacity. "Will prices go down in 2026" is usually a question about the drive somebody is about to buy, and that price is the retail residual sitting on top of the contract market with a promotional layer over it.
The two can move in opposite directions for weeks. A retail SSD can discount hard while the component underneath it is repricing upward, because the discount is coming out of a margin that was set when the stock was bought, not out of the current contract. That is the single most useful thing to understand about this category, and it is why our answer splits: upward on the underlying pressure, unclear on the retail floor.
What our own data can tell you is narrower and more checkable than a forecast. We can say what the cheapest in-stock listing per terabyte costs right now, how many listings are actually buyable, and - through the matched-model index, where each listing is compared only against its own prior price - whether the drives we already track have been getting more or less expensive. That last measure is the one that is immune to our catalogue growing, and it is the only percentage we will quote.
So the practical answer for 2026: if you are waiting for a broad, obvious fall in retail SSD prices, nothing in the sources we cite supports expecting one this year, and one of them explicitly models the opposite. If you are waiting for a good price on a specific drive, that is a different and much more achievable thing - promotional cycles produce those regularly, and the picks table above is showing you the current ones.
This is the section that makes the rest of the page worth citing. An outlook with no stated falsifiers cannot be wrong, and a claim that cannot be wrong is not information. Here is exactly what we are watching, and what each of these moving would mean:
WHAT WOULD PROVE JEFFERIES RIGHT: NAND contract prices continuing to climb through Q4 2026 and into 2027 at the rates their model expects, with the Q3 deceleration proving to be a pause rather than a turn.
WHAT WOULD PROVE THE ACCELERATION CASE RIGHT: YMTC's Wuhan Phase 3 output reaching the market at volume rather than merely entering mass production, and NAND contract growth stalling well before the 2028 horizon. Entering production and moving the price of a consumer drive are separated by a supply chain and, so far, by quarters.
QLC allocation opening up beyond the reported 2026 booking. That is the single fact most load-bearing for this category, and a change to it would be reported by the same coverage we already cite.
The reported supplier increases being walked back or not appearing in retail pricing at all - a price rise announced is not the same as a price rise charged, and the gap between them is visible in our own floor.

If the SSD is for a specific build with a deadline, buy it - the promotional noise means a good price appears often enough that waiting for a better one is a poor use of attention, and the underlying pressure is upward.
If you are buying capacity for its own sake, compare against the hard drive floor on the sibling page before committing. The two markets have decoupled, and at high capacities the gap between them is large enough to change what you should buy rather than merely which brand.
Watch the per-terabyte column rather than the sticker price, and treat any single day's floor as a data point rather than a level - this is the category where that distinction matters most.

Our honest read is unclear for the retail floor, and upward for the underlying pressure - and we would rather print that than manufacture a direction. The supply facts we have cited are a reported ~50% supplier increase and QLC capacity booked through 2026, neither of which suggests relief. But consumer SSD retail carries heavy promotional noise, so the floor you see can move independently of that pressure for weeks at a time.
Because they are made by different companies in different fabs under different constraints. Flash pricing is downstream of NAND allocation and enterprise contracts; hard drive pricing is downstream of nearline manufacturing capacity and lead times. It is the density tier that made cheap high-capacity SSDs possible, and it has been reported booked through 2026. That is a supply fact rather than a quality judgement. For a buyer it means the cheap high-capacity end of the market is the part most exposed to allocation, which is worth knowing if that is the part you were planning to buy from.
At small capacities the question rarely arises - an SSD is the right answer.
