A portable mechanical drive costs several times less per terabyte — the tables above show today's exact spread — and it is not a bad choice. It is the right choice for someone carrying a large archive between locations, handling it carefully, and connecting it occasionally rather than constantly. Plenty of travel involves exactly that.

The honest dividing line is how the drive is used rather than how far it goes. A drive that is connected all day on a train, in a café, on a plane tray table, being knocked and moved while running, should be flash. A drive that comes out of a bag once, gets plugged in on a desk, and goes back in the bag, can be mechanical and the saving is real.

Capacity pushes the same way. If you need more than the largest portable SSD you can afford, a mechanical portable reaches higher for the money, and carrying a bigger archive carefully is better than carrying a smaller one casually.

The more useful framing is what the protection is for. Ingress protection matters if the drive will genuinely meet water or dust — a shoot in weather, a site visit, a beach. Drop resistance matters if the drive is handled while running, which for a mechanical drive is the important case and for flash is less so because the vulnerability is not really there.

For the large majority of travel, which is a drive in a padded laptop bag moving between hotels and offices, the rugged premium is insuring against a risk that is mostly not present. The specific habit worth building is not deleting the source until there are two copies of the destination. Camera cards, phone footage, whatever the original medium is: it is a copy, and it is a copy that costs nothing to keep for another day. Most travel data loss stories are about wiping a card to free space before the copy was verified.
