External Drive Deals - Is Today's Price Actually Good?

What the verdicts mean, and what they cannot mean

Every row above compares a drive's current price against that same drive's own tracked history, in the same condition. Not against a list price, not against a competitor, and not against a manufacturer's suggested figure. On external drives specifically, that distinction is the whole point of the page.

AT/NEAR LOW means the current price is within three percent of the lowest we have recorded for that exact listing in the last thirty days. It does not mean the price is low in absolute terms and it does not mean it will not fall further. It means that on this drive's own recent record, today is at the good end.

TYPICAL means the price sits within seven percent either side of the thirty-day median. It is the most common verdict and the least interesting one, which is the point: most prices most of the time are unremarkable, and a tool that flagged everything as a deal would be worthless.

ELEVATED means the drive is more than seven percent above its thirty-day median. Worth pausing over, but not automatically a reason to wait — in a supply-constrained market an elevated price sometimes reflects real scarcity rather than a seller testing the ceiling.

NEW means we have fewer than seven days of history for that listing and will not compute a range from it. Most of this catalogue was seeded recently, so a large share of these rows say NEW today and will say something more useful in a week. A thirty-day minimum derived from one day of data is a fabricated number wearing the costume of a real one, and printing it beside genuine ranges would devalue every one of them.

Why list-price theatre is worse here than anywhere else

External drives are the category where the fake-discount economy is most developed, and it is worth understanding why rather than just being warned about it.

A discount percentage is a relationship between two numbers, and the seller controls one of them. Raise the reference price and the badge grows without the price you pay moving at all. That mechanic exists across retail, but externals are unusually exposed to it: they are a consumer product with no published reference price anyone can check, sold through channels where a headline discount drives clicks, in a category where buyers are price-sensitive and specification-blind. Nobody argues about whether a My Passport is worth its list price, because nobody knows what its list price should be.

The result is a category where a large badge tells you almost nothing. The same drive can carry a striking discount one week and a modest one the next, at the same price. We do not show discount percentages anywhere on this site, and this is the clearest example of why.

What we show instead is that drive's own tracked history, which the seller cannot adjust. If a listing sat at one price for a month and sits at the same price today, we say TYPICAL regardless of what badge is attached to it. If it genuinely dropped, we say so. The method is dull and it is the only one that survives contact with a category built on manufactured reference points.

The second column worth reading is cost per terabyte, which has the same immunity: it is computed from the price you actually pay and the capacity you actually receive, and neither input is under a marketer's control. The two mechanical families and the flash one move differently

The family column on every row is not decoration. Desktop HDDs, portable HDDs and portable SSDs have behaved like three separate markets, and reading a verdict without noticing which family a row belongs to produces the wrong conclusion.

Desktop mechanical drives are the cheapest storage per terabyte in this cluster and their pricing has been comparatively stable, moving with retail promotion cycles rather than with component supply. A verdict on a desktop external is close to a pure statement about that listing's own promotional rhythm.

Portable mechanical drives sit above them for a physical reason — a 2.5-inch bus-powered drive costs more per terabyte to build and tops out lower — and behave similarly otherwise. The capacity ceiling is the constraint that matters here rather than the price.

Portable SSDs are the family that actually moved. Prices in this category roughly doubled through the NAND shortage, as widely reported across the storage trade press, and that repricing is the context behind every flash verdict on this page. A portable SSD reading TYPICAL today is typical against a baseline that reset upward, which is a genuinely different statement from a mechanical drive reading TYPICAL against a stable one.

The practical instruction is to compare within a family rather than across the table. The cheapest row overall will almost always be a desktop mechanical drive, and that tells you nothing about whether the portable SSD three rows down is well priced for what it is.

Condition is on every row and it changes the reading

External drives sell heavily through marketplace sellers, and at several capacities the buy box is a used listing rather than a new one. Every row carries a condition badge, and each verdict was computed against that condition's own price history rather than a blend of both.

The separation matters more than it sounds. A used listing and a new listing for the same model are different products with different price series, and averaging them produces a verdict describing neither. A used drive at its own recorded low sitting next to a new one that is elevated is a real and useful signal; blended into one average it disappears entirely.

It also changes what a good verdict means. A used external at AT/NEAR LOW is cheap relative to other used listings of that model — which is not the same claim as being a good buy. Used externals have unknown histories in a category where the drive inside was never disclosed even when new, so you are buying a sealed box whose contents and whose past are both undocumented.

That is not a reason to avoid them. It is a reason to match the purchase to the role: a used external as a second copy in a rotation is a sensible use of money, and a used external as the only copy of anything is not. Our backup guidance covers the arrangement that makes the cheap option safe.

The shuck calculation, and when a deal changes it

A meaningful share of the people watching external drive prices are not buying an external drive. They are watching for the moment when opening one beats buying a bare drive, and a deals page is the natural place to catch that moment.

The comparison that decides it lives on our external drives hub, which computes the cheapest external at each capacity against the cheapest bare internal SATA drive at the same capacity, on new listings. That gap is what makes shucking worthwhile or pointless, and it is not fixed: it moves with promotions on one side and supply on the other.

What a good verdict on this page adds is timing. A desktop external reading AT/NEAR LOW at a capacity where the shuck gap is already favourable is the specific combination worth acting on, and it is a combination that does not last, because these are the listings that clear out fastest.

The three costs of shucking do not change with the price, and they are worth restating precisely because a good deal makes people forget them. You do not know which drive is inside until the case is open and the contents vary by batch. Opening ends the warranty. One honest caveat about scale: the saving multiplies across a multi-drive build, which is where shucking genuinely pays, and so does every one of the three costs. Eight unknown drives with no warranty is a different risk profile from one.

Fake capacity does not go on sale

A deals page in this category has to say something the others do not, because the most attractive-looking prices in external storage are frequently not prices at all.

A fake-capacity drive pairs a small genuine flash chip with a controller reflashed to report a size it does not have. It mounts, it shows the advertised capacity, and it accepts files until you pass the real size, at which point it silently overwrites or returns corrupt data. The failure is designed to surface long after any return window, which is why it survives as a business.

Nothing of that kind appears on this page, because two filters run before it could. Any external HDD under $8 per terabyte and any external SSD under $25 per terabyte is rejected outright as arithmetically impossible, and above 2TB we carry only established manufacturers. Both run at seeding and again when a page renders, because a catalogue is only as clean as its last refresh.

The consequence is that a startling price on this page is a real promotion rather than a fraud, and that is the guarantee the filters exist to provide. How often to check, and what our timing means

Prices refresh every few hours, and the stamp at the top of this page shows the moment of the last successful check rather than the time you loaded the page. Those are different things: a page claiming to be live while stamping itself with the current time is telling you nothing about the data behind it.

For a purchase you intend to make within a week, daily is enough. Retail drive pricing does not move on the timescale equities do, and rows that change meaningfully in a day are the exception rather than the rule.

For external drives specifically there is a seasonal rhythm worth knowing. This category runs deeper and more frequent promotions than bare drives do, concentrated around the retail calendar, and the gap between a promoted price and a standing one is wider here than almost anywhere else in storage. That is an argument for patience on a purchase you can defer, and an argument for acting quickly when a verdict and a stock level line up.

The signal genuinely worth acting on fast is not a price move, it is a stock move. Anything that disappears from these tables disappeared because it was not buyable at load time, and that is not recoverable by waiting. When you see a drive you want at a price you accept, taking it generally beats optimising the last few percent.

One caveat on the window: it is a window on our tracking, not on the universe. We measure Amazon US listings, and external drives in particular move through warehouse clubs and direct manufacturer stores we do not price.
