ST36000NM001M is not just a larger ST32000NM004K. The 36TB documentation used here describes SMR/ZAC host-managed behavior. The 32TB tracked Exos row is conventional CMR. That changes which storage stacks are valid.

For conventional environments, 32TB CMR can be the better engineering answer even if 36TB looks better on raw capacity. For SMR-aware environments, 36TB can materially improve system density.

Power, cooling and rebuilds

Per-drive power is only part of the model. Fewer drives per PB can lower shelf-level watts and cooling demand, but each dense drive still has to be cooled continuously. Rebuilds and rebalancing also move more data per spindle.

Compare watts per protected TB, drive count per protected PB and the operational cost of qualification. A spreadsheet that uses only sticker price per raw TB is incomplete.
