Every storage medium we track has been squeezed in some way over the past year except one. LTO tape has held both its price per terabyte and, more strikingly, its availability, while hard drives climbed and enterprise flash became something you queue for.
The headline number: tape media currently sits well under a third of the cheapest hard drive price per terabyte, and every LTO cartridge line we track is in stock. That second fact is the one that could not be stated in our earlier reports, because availability tracking only began accruing daily on July 23, 2026. We now have a trend line rather than a snapshot, and tape is flat at the top of it while the disk categories are not.
This report sets out the live numbers, the trend, and - at length, because it matters more than the price - the constraints that make tape the wrong answer for most of the people who will read this.
The stat block above computes the current floor for each medium from our catalogue. Tape's advantage per terabyte is large and it is not close.
One methodological note, because it changed the numbers materially. LTO media is frequently sold in ten and twenty-cartridge packs, and our catalogue was storing the per-terabyte figure for those rows as though the pack were a single cartridge - a twenty-pack of 18TB LTO-9 was reporting a per-terabyte price roughly twenty times too high. We found that while building this report and corrected it, and the figures here and on our tape pages now divide by the full pack capacity. Multi-pack buying is the normal way tape is purchased at scale, so this was not a rounding issue; it made the cheapest tape look like the most expensive storage on the site.
We mention it because a report about a price advantage should be transparent about a defect that was suppressing that advantage in our own data.
The chart plots the cheapest live price per terabyte for tape and for hard drives across our price-history window. The thesis this report could have set out to prove is that the gap widened as disk spiked while tape held flat.
We are letting the chart report rather than forcing that. Where the data shows tape drifting as well, the chart shows it drifting. A report that only draws the chart when the chart agrees with the headline is not analysis.
What is unambiguous is the availability side, and that is the genuinely new evidence. Our stock tracking, which began on July 23, 2026, records the share of tracked models with at least one in-stock offer, per category, per day. Tape sits at the top of that chart and stays there. The disk and flash categories do not.
This is the chart our earlier reports promised and could not draw. The Tier 1 availability report published a snapshot with a caption noting that it would become a trend line as daily data accrued; nineteen days of data later, it has.
The honest window is short and we label it on the chart rather than in a footnote. Nineteen days is enough to show a direction and not enough to describe a cycle, and anyone reading a three-week series as a structural trend is over-reading it.
What it shows within that window is a clear separation: tape flat and complete, the stressed categories both lower and moving. Availability, unlike price, cannot be argued with - a drive is either buyable or it is not.
Everything above is the case for tape. Here is why most readers should not buy it.
The drive is the cost, not the media. An LTO drive or autoloader is a several-thousand-dollar class of purchase, and it is a fixed cost paid before you store a single terabyte. That is what makes tape's per-terabyte advantage misleading in isolation: media is cheap, entry is not. The crossover point where tape's media advantage repays the drive sits well into tens of terabytes of genuinely cold data, and below that a shelf of hard drives is cheaper and simpler by a wide margin.
Access is sequential and it is not a detail. Tape is a linear medium. Retrieving a specific file means winding to it. This is entirely fine for the workload tape is for - restore a set, retrieve an archive - and completely unsuitable as anything resembling live storage. If you are imagining tape as a cheaper NAS, stop.
Generational compatibility has rules and they are strict. LTO drives read back a limited number of generations and write back fewer. That constrains both what a given drive can do with older media and how long a media investment remains usable as drives are replaced. Check the read and write compatibility of the specific generation before buying either half.
And media handling matters in a way disks have trained people out of. Tape is sensitive to environment and to how it is stored, and a cartridge that has been badly kept is a restore that fails when you need it.
The media price is the easy number and the least useful one on its own. A tape deployment has four cost lines and only one of them appears in our catalogue.
The drive or library is the dominant capital cost and it is paid up front, before a single terabyte is stored. A standalone LTO drive sits in a several-thousand-dollar class of purchase; an autoloader or small library is more. That is the number that decides whether tape makes sense, and it is why the per-terabyte media advantage is misleading in isolation - you are amortising a large fixed cost across however much data you eventually write.
The media itself is the line we do price, and it is genuinely cheap. This is the part of the tape story that is straightforwardly true.
The third line is the one people forget: the second copy. Tape's value proposition is archival, and an archive on a single copy is not an archive. Whatever the media arithmetic says, double it if the data actually matters, which it does or you would not be archiving it.
The fourth is time. Tape is operationally heavier than disk - cartridges are handled, catalogued, stored somewhere with a stable environment, and periodically verified. That labour is real and it does not appear in any price comparison, including ours. For an organisation with someone whose job includes this, it is absorbed. For an individual, it is the reason tape usually loses even when the arithmetic says otherwise.
Tape holding full availability while disk and flash thin out is the most quantitatively solid claim in this report, and it deserves both emphasis and a caveat.
The emphasis: availability is not an opinion. A model either has a buyable offer or it does not, and unlike price it cannot be argued about, revised or explained away by composition effects in the same manner. Our tracking records this daily per category, and tape sits at the top of that chart without moving.
The caveat is sample size. We track a small number of tape lines - it is a narrow category by nature, because LTO is a standardised medium sold by a handful of manufacturers in a handful of generations. A category with few rows can show a flat, complete availability line partly because there is less to go out of stock. That is a genuine limitation and we would rather state it than let a clean chart imply more precision than the underlying sample supports.
What survives the caveat is the direction. Even allowing for a narrow category, tape is not exhibiting the deterioration that the disk and flash categories are, and it is not doing so across a window in which those categories moved substantially.
Two groups, specifically, and both are narrower than the price advantage suggests.
The first is anyone with a genuinely large cold archive who has been priced out of doing it on disk. This is the group the shortage created: buyers whose plan was a wall of 20TB drives, who have watched that plan get more expensive and less available, and for whom the data in question is written once and read rarely. For them the tape arithmetic that never quite worked now does, because the comparison moved.
The second is the archival end of AI work. Model libraries and training set snapshots are large, they are cold once superseded, and they accumulate relentlessly. Tape is a rational medium for the superseded ones. We would point out that our model library NAS guidance covers the disk-based alternative honestly, and for most individuals that remains the better answer - the tape case here is for organisations with real archive volume rather than an enthusiast with a full NAS.
Everybody else is better served by disk. That is not a hedge; it follows from the drive cost and the sequential access, and it does not change because media is cheap.
The interesting question is not whether to buy tape. It is why tape was missed by a squeeze that hit everything else.
The answer is demand composition. The pressure documented across our sourcing - hyperscaler absorption of nearline capacity from TrendForce in September 2025, enterprise HDD orders queuing beyond a year per Tom's Hardware citing DigiTimes in November 2025, NAND allocation shifting toward AI infrastructure - is demand for warm, random-access storage. AI training and inference do not run on tape. So the demand that inflated disk and flash simply did not arrive at tape's door.
That is worth holding onto as a general principle rather than a tape fact: shortages are workload-specific. A medium is squeezed when the marginal buyer wants what it does, and left alone when they do not. If your workload genuinely matches an unfashionable medium, a shortage in the fashionable ones is an opportunity rather than a problem.
