64GB DDR5: what you are buying

Sixty-four gigabytes of DDR5 is normally a pair of 32GB modules. It is also sold as four 16GB modules for boards with four slots, and rarely as a single 64GB module, which exists but is uncommon at retail. Everything on this page is priced per gigabyte of the total, so the layouts compare directly, and the module count column shows which you are looking at.

This is the size at which the reported price increases of 2026 become dramatic in absolute terms. The figure quoted most widely is for exactly this size: Tom's Hardware, using PCPartPicker's average-price data, reported a 64GB DDR5-5600 kit moving from $191 in August 2025 to $1,118 in August 2026. That is a reported average across retailers for a specific kit and month, and the live floor on this page is the cheapest single in-stock listing today, so the two are different instruments and neither corrects the other.

At a price this high the difference between a listing and a counterfeit matters more, because the incentive to imitate a $1,000 product is larger than for a $300 one. The plausibility floor for this size is shown below, and it is the number to compare a suspiciously cheap 64GB listing against.

The cheapest is TeamGroup 64GB (2x32GB) DDR5-5600 CL46 at $880, or $13.75 per gigabyte; the median across the size is $17.97 per gigabyte. The gap between them is worth as much as either number: a floor far below the median means the cheap end is one or two kits deep, and a floor close to it means the size is priced tightly together. The plausibility floor for this exact size is $8.09 per gigabyte, computed from 65 established-brand listings; a kit priced under it is priced where a counterfeit would be, and is a reason to check the seller, not a verdict.

How 64GB prices against the neighbouring sizes

Per gigabyte, at the cheapest kit for each size and on the date above: 32GB at $8.63 per gigabyte (64GB is +59.3% against it); 96GB at $14.17 per gigabyte (64GB is -2.9% against it). That is a levels comparison of single cheapest kits, so it can change because one kit sells out or appears, with no seller changing a price. It tells you where the cheapest gigabyte is today, which is useful for deciding what to buy today; it does not tell you that prices moved.

The per-gigabyte view is worth having and it is also the reason for caution. A larger kit that costs less per gigabyte is still a larger purchase, and the cheapest gigabyte you do not need is the most expensive one you can buy. The next section is about that.

Who needs 64GB, and who does not

Sixty-four gigabytes is workstation territory for most people, and the honest description of who needs it is narrower than the number of people who buy it. It suits those who hold very large datasets or projects in memory, run several virtual machines at once, work with large uncompressed media or scientific data, or run local models whose weights are held in system memory. For those users memory is a working constraint and the purchase is justified by a task that does not fit in less.

For a gaming desktop, general use or a typical creative workflow, 64GB is well beyond what the software makers' own published requirements ask for, and buying it is a bet on future needs paid for at a price that is a large multiple of what it was a year ago by the reporting we cite. Check your platform first

Sixty-four gigabytes is within the maximum of current DDR5 desktop boards, but maker documentation varies on which population, two large modules or four smaller ones, a given board supports at its rated settings. The board maker publishes that; the manual or the memory support list for your exact board is the authority. We do not infer it from the generation or the kit.

Do not buy 64GB on panic

Sixty-four gigabytes is also where speculative buying does the most damage, because the amount at risk is largest. Buying 64GB to future-proof a machine that runs comfortably in 32GB locks in the highest-priced version of a decision you may never need to make. If you cannot name the task that needs 64GB today, the right amount to buy this week is none.
