32GB DDR5: what you are buying

You will also see 32GB as a single module, and occasionally as four 8GB modules, though the four-stick layout is rare at this size. The total is what the price is divided by on this page, so a pair of 16GB modules and one 32GB module compare directly per gigabyte, and the module count column tells you which of the two you are looking at.

The layout matters for a practical reason that has nothing to do with the price. A pair uses two slots and leaves a two-slot board with no room to add more later without replacing what is there, whereas a single 32GB module uses one slot and leaves the other free. Whether that matters to you depends on whether you expect to add memory, and in this market the honest default is that you do not, but it is the kind of thing worth knowing before the parcel arrives rather than after.

Because 32GB is the size most builders reach for, it is also the size with the most listings, the most bundles and the most competition, which shows up in two ways. The cheapest is Lexar ARES 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5-6000 CL30 at $276, or $8.63 per gigabyte; the median across the size is $17.19 per gigabyte. The gap between them is worth as much as either number: a floor far below the median means the cheap end is one or two kits deep, and a floor close to it means the size is priced tightly together. If your machine already has 16GB and nothing you do is slowing to a crawl for want of memory, the case for upgrading to 32GB today is weak. The case gets stronger only when you can point to something you actually run that does not fit. Buying for a workload you might start is how buyers end up owning idle capacity bought near the top of a price cycle.

Check your platform first

Check your motherboard's manual for the memory it supports before you buy. It lists the generation, the maximum total capacity, the number of slots and often the module sizes and rated speeds the maker has tested. A 32GB kit is within the range every current DDR5 board supports, but a kit's stated speed is reached only through a stored profile the board has to support, and the board's own list is the authority, not a listing.

Do not buy 32GB on panic

The thirty-two gigabyte kit is where panic buying concentrates, because it is the size most people want and the size most reported price spikes are quoted for. If you are reading a headline about kits doubling in price and feeling that you must buy this week, that feeling is the thing to distrust. Buy 32GB if your machine needs it now. If it does not, the price you would pay today is a price you can decline.
