What the 1PB claim really means
A one-petabyte Synology volume is not just a chassis feature. It requires the right drive layout, memory configuration, RAID group, expansion planning and support posture. The RS11626xs+ has the bay count and platform positioning for very large deployments, but the economics change sharply when the only fully supported drive set is a vendor-validated list.
For smaller deployments, the first sixteen bays are still the natural budget unit. That is why the fill table models 12TB through 24TB drive scenarios against RAID 6 usable capacity. Expansion shelves should be planned only after the first chassis capacity and backup target are clear.
Synology drive policy considerations
Synology enterprise rack systems are exactly where "fits" and "officially supported" must remain separate.
