None of the manufacturers whose documentation we sourced for this cluster - HPE, Quantum, Tandberg, IBM - publish a usage-hours figure a buyer can independently verify the way a car's odometer can be cross-checked against a title record. A tape drive's own internal error and usage counters exist, but reading them requires vendor-specific diagnostic software the seller would need to run and disclose, not something visible from a listing photo. When a listing says "low head hours," "lightly used," or "tested working," that is the seller reporting what they were told or observed - real information, potentially, but not a manufacturer-verified fact, and we render it as exactly that tier.
OEM and library locks - one confirmed case, and how to check for more

Quantum's own user guide for its LTO-4 "Model B" half-height drive states, quoted verbatim: "The LTO-4 (Model B) tape drive can ONLY be used with the LTO-4 (Model B) drivers and firmware." That is a genuine, documented lock specific to that model designation - buy the wrong driver package for it and it will not work as a generic LTO-4 drive. Five independent resellers identify part number 0Y577J as Dell's LTO-8 DATA CARTRIDGE (media), not a drive; one reseller's own page states outright "This page describes a tape cartridge/media, not a tape drive." A $581 price point for a single SAS tape drive would also be unusually low. Not seeded as a drive, and not reclassified as media either without independent capacity/pack-quantity verification this session did not do - dropped, and reported here as the reject it is.

A DLT-format cleaning cartridge (Quantum, ASIN B000132XJW) was found by the same search and excluded - DLT is a different, incompatible tape format from LTO.
