The RS1226RP+ is in Synology's RS Plus series policy table. On it, an unlisted hard drive is supported for migration from an existing Synology system only - not for a new storage pool; an unlisted 2.5" SATA SSD is supported for new installation and storage pool creation, cache creation and migration from an existing Synology system; and an unlisted M.2 NVMe SSD is supported for migration from an existing Synology system only. A drive on Synology's incompatibility list is not supported at all. Source: Synology, DSM 7.3, last updated 27 May 2026.

Announced alongside the RS1226+ on 5 August 2026, the RS1226RP+ is the redundant-power version; the drive rules do not differ between the two.
Synology's article states: “The table below summarizes drive compatibility by product series and drive type for models released in 2025 and later:” This is the RS Plus series table, transcribed from its merged cells. "Not Listed" is the column you are in with almost any drive bought on price.
| Drive type | On compatibility list | Not listed | On incompatibility list |
|---|---|---|---|
| HDD | Supported for new installation and storage pool creation and migration from an existing Synology system | Supported for migration from an existing Synology system | Not supported |
| 2.5" SATA SSD | Supported for new installation and storage pool creation, cache creation and migration from an existing Synology system | Supported for new installation and storage pool creation, cache creation and migration from an existing Synology system | Not supported |
| M.2 NVMe SSD | Supported for new installation and storage pool creation, cache creation and migration from an existing Synology system | Supported for migration from an existing Synology system | Not supported |
A drive on Synology's incompatibility list is not supported for a new installation or storage pool, for cache, or for migration - on every series. The incompatibility list is not the same thing as being absent from the compatibility list. A drive on it is one Synology has tested and found incompatible; Synology's Storage Manager article defines that status as “This drive is tested to be incompatible with your Synology storage system.” A drive that is merely missing from the compatibility list is "Unverified" instead - “This drive has not been verified as compatible with your Synology storage system.” - and Synology says that for such a drive its technical support “may only provide limited assistance.”
On the RS1226RP+ an unlisted hard drive cannot build a new pool, and every hard drive on Synology's list was a Synology drive when we read the list on 2026-08-19. So for a new pool this lists Synology's own SATA drives in stock - check the compatibility list for the RS1226RP+ before you buy, because a drive on the list for one model is not automatically on it for another. Third-party hard drives fit the bays but are supported here for migration only.
| Drive | Capacity | $/TB | Price | Condition | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Synology HAT5300 16TB NAS | 16TB | $62.50 | $999.99 | New This offer: sold by Adorama · Amazon says New / Unknown · Adorama's note: New | Buy on Amazon → |
2.5-inch SATA SSDs: an unlisted 2.5" SATA SSD can build a pool on the RS1226RP+, but we track no 2.5-inch SATA SSD in stock right now, so there is nothing to list.
M.2 NVMe: an unlisted M.2 NVMe SSD is supported for migration from an existing Synology system only on this model, so we list no M.2 drives for it - for a cache or an M.2 pool, the drive needs to be on Synology's list for the RS1226RP+.

Which models this cluster covers: those on Synology's product list (50 products, read 2026-10-05) with a 2025-or-later launch announcement in Synology's newsroom (read 2026-10-05). We do not infer a launch year from a model number.
Only by migration. The RS1226RP+ is in Synology's RS Plus series table, where an unlisted hard drive is supported for migration from an existing Synology system, and not for a new installation or a new storage pool. Synology attaches a condition: "Drives must be migrated directly from an existing Synology system. If the original storage pool or SSD cache is removed from the drive, the drive will no longer be usable in your current Synology system." Source: Synology, DSM 7.3, last updated 27 May 2026.
For a new pool or a cache, no: an unlisted M.2 NVMe SSD is supported for migration from an existing Synology system only - migration from an existing Synology system. Synology's reason: "To ensure system reliability, only M.2 NVMe SSDs meeting strict performance, endurance, and thermal management requirements are supported for creating storage pools and caches." Source: Synology, DSM 7.3, last updated 27 May 2026.
A drive on Synology's incompatibility list is not supported for a new installation or storage pool, for cache, or for migration - on every series. That is a separate list from the compatibility list: a drive on it is one Synology has tested and found incompatible, which Storage Manager reports as "Incompatible". A drive simply missing from the compatibility list is "Not Listed", the middle column of the table on this page.
Synology announced it on August 5, 2026 ("Synology® introduces RackStation RS1226+ and RS1226RP+ designed for growing edge and remote environments"). It matters because Synology states: "The new drive compatibility policies apply only to new models starting in 2025 and do not apply retroactively to previously launched systems." A model launched before 2025 is outside these tables altogether.
Synology's article is written for "DSM 7.3 and above" and gives no build number and no date for the change, so we print neither. Its last-updated stamp is 2026-05-27; we last read it on 2026-10-05.
