Every row in the table above compares a drive's current price against that same drive's own tracked history — not against a list price, not against a competitor, and not against a manufacturer's suggested figure. In a market where reference prices are set to make discounts look large, a drive's own record is the only comparison that survives contact with reality.
AT/NEAR LOW means the current price is within three percent of the lowest we have recorded for that exact drive in thirty days. It does not mean the price is low in absolute terms and it does not promise the price will not fall further. It means that on this drive's own record, today is at the good end.
TYPICAL means the price sits within seven percent either side of the thirty-day median, and it is deliberately the most common verdict. Most prices most of the time are unremarkable, and a tool that flagged everything as a deal would be worth nothing. If you need the drive, a TYPICAL price is a perfectly reasonable price to pay.
ELEVATED means more than seven percent above the median. Worth pausing over, but not automatically a reason to wait — in a constrained market an elevated price sometimes reflects real scarcity, and the drive may become unavailable before it becomes cheap.
NEW means fewer than seven days of history, so no range is computed. This is the most important rule on the page. A thirty-day minimum derived from a single day of data is a fabricated number wearing the costume of a real one, and printing it beside genuine figures would devalue all of them. Those rows show the date we started tracking and nothing else.
BarraCuda is the line where a good deal verdict can lead you into a bad purchase, and it is worth being explicit about the mechanism because no other line we track has this problem in the same way.
The trap works like this. A shingled BarraCuda hits its tracked low and reads AT/NEAR LOW. A few dollars per terabyte higher sits an IronWolf at a TYPICAL price — no discount, no flag, nothing to catch the eye. If the drive is going into an array, the boring TYPICAL drive is the correct purchase and the flagged bargain is a mistake, because recording technology governs whether the drive belongs in that role at all and no price makes a shingled drive appropriate for a rebuild.
This is exactly why the recording column travels with the verdict in the table above rather than living only on the hub. A verdict answers one question — is this cheap for this drive — and it is silent on the question that actually matters for an array. Reading the two columns together is the whole discipline.

Check it before acting on a verdict here: when the gap is a few dollars, the cheap drive is a false economy for anything but a single-drive read-heavy role; when it is large, BarraCuda is genuinely the rational buy for that role.
None of this makes a low BarraCuda price a bad thing. It makes it a price you should evaluate against the job rather than against the badge.
The discount percentage is the most manipulated number in storage retail. A percentage is a relationship between two figures and the seller controls one of them: raise the reference and the discount grows while the price you pay stays exactly where it was. This is legal, ubiquitous, and it is why a large badge tells you almost nothing.
Cost per terabyte has no such weakness. It is computed from the price paid and the capacity received, neither of which a marketer controls. A drive at $26/TB is a better rate than one at $48/TB regardless of what either claims to be reduced from, and that ordering does not move with the framing.
So the table gives you both. The verdict answers whether the drive is cheap relative to its own recent history; the per-terabyte figure answers whether it is cheap relative to every other way of buying a terabyte. A drive can sit at its own record low and still be poor value per terabyte, which usually means it has been consistently expensive rather than that today is special.

The most reliable saving in storage is not a discount, it is buying the right rung of the capacity ladder. Cost per terabyte does not scale linearly, so the next size up is regularly cheaper per terabyte than the size you planned on — sometimes while costing barely more in absolute terms.
The ladder block above computes this from live prices across the whole line rather than from a rule of thumb, so you can see where the rate improves and where it gets worse. In a normal market the curve improves steadily and then flattens; in 2026 it has been lumpier, with scarcity at particular capacities producing spikes that have nothing to do with underlying manufacturing economics.
There is a wrinkle unique to this line: moving up a rung can also move you across a recording-technology boundary in either direction. Seagate's list puts the 4TB and 8TB BarraCuda in SMR and the 12TB and above in CMR, so on this line a capacity jump is sometimes also a technology change — occasionally in your favour. Check the badge on the row you are jumping to rather than assuming it matches the one you came from.
For a single-drive desktop role none of that changes the arithmetic much. For anything else it changes the decision entirely, which is the recurring theme of this whole line.
Prices refresh every few hours and the stamp at the top of this page is the moment of the last successful check rather than the time you loaded the page. Those are different things: a page that claims to be live but stamps itself with the current time is telling you nothing about the data behind it.
For a purchase you intend to make this week, daily is enough. Retail drive pricing does not move on the timescale that markets do, and rows that shift meaningfully within a day are the exception. For a purchase you can defer, weekly costs nothing and lets the history window become more informative — the longer we track a drive, the more its thirty-day range is worth reading.
The signal worth acting on quickly is not price, it is stock. In this market a drive disappearing is more common and more consequential than a drive getting expensive, and it is not recoverable by patience. Anything that vanishes from these tables vanished because it was not buyable at load time.
One caveat on the window: it covers our tracking, not the universe. BarraCuda is a budget line to begin with, which changes how a used or refurbished listing should be read. On an enterprise line the refurb discount is often the difference between affordable and not; here the new drive is already inexpensive, so the saving is proportionally smaller and the warranty question looms larger.
The trade is the same one that applies everywhere: a used drive typically carries a seller warranty rather than a manufacturer one, and those are different products even when the stated term matches. A seller warranty is a promise from whoever sold it to you, and its worth depends on that seller still trading and still honouring it when you need them.
For the single-drive read-heavy roles this line is built for, and where the data is replaceable, a used BarraCuda at a genuine discount is defensible. For anything holding the only copy of something it is not, and the small saving against a new drive makes the argument weaker here than it would be on a more expensive line.
